Maria Bello has gone public about her romantic relationship with her best friend in a column for the New York Times, revealing how she broke the news to her 12-year-old son Jackson.
Bello wrote that she had come to realize that she was in love with her best friend Clare after two years of being just friends but that she had hesitated to tell Jackson because she was not sure how it would affect his relationship with Claire.
‘I was with someone romantically and I hadn’t told him,’ she wrote.
‘I had become involved with a woman who was my best friend, and, as it happens, a person who is like a godmother to my son.’
Bello wrote that she had been immediately fascinated by Claire when she had met her two years ago but had not initially realized the attraction was romantic.
‘We had an immediate connection but didn’t think of it as romantic or sexual,’ Bellow wrote.
‘She was one of the most beautiful, charming, brilliant and funny people I had ever met, but it didn’t occur to me, until that soul-searching moment in my garden, that we could perhaps choose to love each other romantically.’
Bello wrote that she had had many whirlwind flings with men that she thought were true love at the time but what she and Claire had was the real thing
‘My feelings for Clare aren’t the same as the butterflies-in-the-stomach, angst-ridden love I have felt before; they are much deeper than that,’ Bello wrote.
It turns out Jackson didn’t have a problem with their relationship and that the three of them and Jackson’s father Dan now have a great family relationship together.
Bellow wrote that Jackson’s response was ‘Mom, love is love, whatever you are.’
