Azealia Banks: I’m bisexual, I can call Perez Hilton ‘faggot’

Azealia Banks: I’m bisexual, I can call Perez Hilton ‘faggot’
06 January 2013

American rapper and singer Azealia Banks has said because she is a bisexual, she can call gay celebrity blogger Perez Hilton a ‘faggot’.

The ‘BBD’ singer reacted to criticism from the celebrity gossip columnist that she should not have written a song dissing fellow singer Angel Haze.

On Twitter, she said: ‘Omg u should just kill yourself… Like for real… lol what a messy faggot you are.’

The rapper then attempted to apologize if anyone was ‘indirectly offended’, but denied that the word she used was a homophobic slur.

‘A faggot is not a homosexual male,’ she said. ‘A faggot is any male who acts like a female. There’s a BIG difference.’

But now, presumably after sleeping on it, Banks said she was not as ‘moved’ as people would expect her to be.

She said: ‘Really not as moved by this f word thing as u all want me to be. As a bisexual person I knew what I meant when I used that word.

‘And I meant what I meant when I used that word.’

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation disagreed, and condemned Banks’ language.

Writing on their website, they said: ‘Banks’ claim that the word ‘fa**ot’ doesn’t mean a gay male is not true.

‘Regardless of her intent or her personal definition, what matters is the meaning given to that word by those who hear it, and the damage it causes when they do.

‘Undoubtedly there are gay kids who follow her on Twitter who hear this word in an entirely different context.

‘This word is used almost universally by bullies, often as part of a larger verbal or physical assault. This word hurts those kids, no matter what Banks meant by it.’
