Onlookers are stunned by all-dancing performance for queer visibility in India
Yaariyan, a group for queer youth in India, stunned passersby with a flashmob for LGBT rights at the busy Dadar East Station in Mumbai during rush hour on 25 January.
As part of Queer Azaadi Mumbai (Mumbai Pride), Yaariyan members performed a well-choreographed and rehearsed Bollywood-style dance routine.
The routine starts with one dapper dancer who is joined by more and more, all with their hands painted rainbow colors, until they are performing a full Bollywood item number with choreography that includes same-sex couples dancing.
The flashmob ends with the waving rainbow flags and a chant:
‘If you’re gay and you know it say ‘homo’! Homo!
If you’re hijra [transgender] and you know it clap your hands!
If you’re queer and you know it clap your hands!
If you’re bisexual and you know it clap your hands!
If you’re lesbian and you know it say ‘lesbo!’ Lesbo!
The crowd of interested onlookers look mostly bemused by the performance.
This year’s performance follows another flashmob on Marine Drive in Mumbai for last year’s Queer Azaadi Mumbai.
Yaariyan is the youth initiative of the Humsafar Trust, India’s oldest LGBT rights organization.
