Boxer Micky Ward, whose life was depicted in the film The Fighter, pulled out of an event in Massachusetts Friday (31 August) where he was to announce his support of incumbent US Senator Scott Brown.

Ward tells his hometown newspaper, Lowell Sun, that he was in favor of the Republican until he discovered Brown is against gay marriage and anti-union.

‘I can’t support Scott Brown,’ Ward said. ‘I just can’t do it.’

‘I found out Scott is anti-union and I’m a Teamster guy,’ he added. ‘I found out he’s also against gay marriage and I say if you love someone you should have the same rights no matter who you are.’

Brown is locked into a tight battle with Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren. He is seeking a second term for the seat that was held for 47 years by the late Ted Kennedy who died in 2009.

Ward was portrayed by Mark Wahlberg in the 2o1o biographical film that won Christian Bale and Melissa Leo Academy Awards for their portrayals of his brother and mother, respectively.
