The new face of American X Factor Britney Spears had an emotional moment on Sunday when an old friend auditioned for the talent show in San Francisco.

Don Philip, who duetted with Spears 10 years ago, announced in front of thousands at the Oracle Arena that he is gay.

‘At the time I didn’t think I was worthy,’ Philip said of when he last new Spears. ‘I didn’t think you thought it was okay that I am gay.’

‘I think it is fine you are gay,’ Spears responded, as reported by People.

The Daily Mail revealed the singer is Philip, who appeared on Spears’ debut album, Baby One More Time, and toured with her.

A source told People: ‘You could see that Britney recognised him straight away. She got this huge smile on her face and her eyes lit up. It was so sweet.’

Season 2 of the US version of The X Factor will start on Fox on 12 September. Auditions will be in Providence, Rhode Island from 27 to 29 June and in Greensboro, North Carolina from 8 to 9 July.
