Donald Trump: ‘I’m evolving on gay marriage’
Mogul billionaire claims while he is still opposed to marriage equality, his views are very different to what they were 10 years ago
Donald Trump has admitted his views on same-sex marriage are ‘evolving’.
The property mogul has claimed while he is a strong opponent of marriage equality, his views are different to what they were 10 years ago.
Speaking before Saturday’s Miss Universe final pageant to gay MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts, the billionaire said he was actually inspired by President Obama’s change of heart.
‘I think I’m evolving, and I think I’m a very fair person, but I have been for traditional marriage,’ Trump said.
‘I am for a marriage between a man and a woman.’
Trump was heavily criticized for his choice to hold the Miss Universe beauty pageant in Moscow, Russia.
‘Perhaps we should have known and we didn’t, and after we signed it became quite clear,’ Trump told Roberts.
‘We have a lot of gay people who work at Miss Universe, and we said, “What do you think?” And they said, “We want to go. We want to show our stuff.”
When he was on the red carpet, Miss Universe host Roberts blasted Russia’s homophobic legislation.
‘The Russian laws obviously are a dark time and a dark chapter in LGBT history here,’ he said.
‘They’re seeking a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist and meanwhile it causes new problems because it allows people to abuse and hurt and vilify the LGBT community under the guise of some propaganda law that’s just ridiculous.’
