Meredith Baxter and girlfriend Nancy Locke are planning to get married.

TMZ.com reports that the couple went to the Beverly Hills courthouse Friday (8 November) to get the official paperwork for their upcoming nuptials.

The date for the wedding is not known.

Baxter and Locke have been together since 2005 – four years before the actress came out publicly as a lesbian.

Best known for her role as Elyse Keaton on Family Ties, Baxter also starred on the ABC drama Family and was nominated for an Emmy for her performance in The Betty Broderick Story.

It will be her fourth marriage but first to a woman. The mother of five was most famously married to actor David Birney from 1974-89.

In her 2011 memoir, Baxter wrote that the actor was physically and mentally abusive which he has denied.
