A gay artist was attacked last night at an exhibition of his work in New Delhi, India.

The artist, Balbir Krishan, claims the attackers vandalised his paintings, which explore same-sex relationships, and threatened him at the capital's Lalit Kala Akademi.

The Times of India reported that the assailant's face was covered by a handkerchief.

He then pushed and kicked the 38 year old Krishan, a double amputee who has lost both his legs, while hurling insults at him.

Krishan allegedly received threatening phone calls prior to the opening the show, accusing the artist of "spreading" homosexuality in the country.

He is known for painting male nudes, but this is the first time he has dealt with the subject of homosexuality.

Speaking after the incident, he said: 'I never thought something like this could happen here. If my paintings offend anyone, they are welcome to discuss it with me.'

A complaint has been filed with the police.
