Two gay Republican groups have been denied formal participation in the Texas Republican Party convention and are calling for the state party’s leadership to get with the times and realize there are many Republicans who now support LGBTI rights.

The Log Cabin Republicans and Metroplex Republicans held a news conference yesterday in which they decried their exclusion from being able to have information booths at the conference which is being held at the Fort Worth Convention Exhibit Hall.

‘Overall, Log Cabin Republicans of Texas has found incredible support within the Republican party — Texans, like the rest of the country, are evolving on LGBT rights issues,’ said Log Cabin Republicans of Texas chairman Jeffrey Davis.

‘The Republican Party of Texas has even welcomed many of our members as delegates to the Texas State Republican Convention. However, the party has denied our several attempts to host a booth in the convention exhibit hall, citing archaic language in the party platform to support their actions.

‘We deserve to occupy a booth just like anyone else, and it’s time that the Texas GOP’s hypocritical policies and procedures are replaced by new ones that match the general opinion of Texan Republican voters.’

The groups have been excluded from the conference because the Texas Republican Party’s platform states that, ‘the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society and contributes to the breakdown of the family unit.’

Log Cabin Republicans national executive director Gregory T. Angelo said anti-gay Republicans were shooting themselves in the foot by excluding gay Republicans and their allies if they wanted to win government.

‘It’s simply unconscionable that more than a dozen years since Log Cabin Republicans took the fight for gay equality against the homophobic fringe of the Party, the Texas State GOP still doesn’t get it,’ Angelo said.

‘We are your friends and neighbors; we are your colleagues and family members; above all else, we are loyal Republicans, and deserve a literal seat at the table at the Texas State GOP Convention. Make no mistake: This isn’t about disagreements we may have on civil marriage; this isn’t about the party platform — this is about an anti-gay wing of the party that hates gay people so much they can’t even stand to see us acknowledged as a necessary part of a winning Republican coalition.

‘At a time when Democrats are working overtime to turn Texas from red to purple and then a vibrant blue, now is not the time for the politics of subtraction and division in the GOP; it is time for addition and multiplication. The Texas State GOP and its leadership ignore that advice at their peril.’

The Texas Democrats have responded by offering the Log Cabin Republicans a booth at their convention.

‘Today, the Texas Democratic Party officially invites the Log Cabin Republicans to sign up for a booth at our Texas Democratic State Convention in Dallas and share their ideas about the future of our state,’ Texas Democratic Party executive director William Hailer said.

‘We celebrate the diversity of our party, that is what our state convention is all about.

‘The Texas Democratic Party has always been proud to be the party of inclusion, the party of all people. It is a shame that in 2014, the Republican Party of Texas continues to exclude and hold prejudice against Texans.’

However the Log Cabin Republicans have turned down the offer, saying they remain loyal to their party.

The Log Cabin Republicans take their name from the log cabin Abraham Lincoln is supposed to have built.

Some have speculated that Lincoln was in a same-sex relationship with his friend Joshua Speed before both married as they shared a bed together for several years.

Not only Republicans, but Republicans in Texas... Were they expecting the welcome mat to be rolled out? I really don't see how they can be surprised.
