Openly gay WWE wrestler Darren Young will be a playable character in the upcoming WWE 2K14 video game – to be released 29 October this year.

His inclusion was officially announced on August 17 as one of the wrestlers to be included in the game’s 30 Year of WrestleMania mode – although the list was prematurely leaked on IGN.

Young will be a playable character in the game alongside WWE greats such as The Rock, Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, King Kong Bundy and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

‘For almost three full decades, WWE has been host to the grandest spectacle in all of entertainment, WrestleMania,’ 2K Sports spokesman Aubrey Sitterson said in a statement.

‘Now, 2K and WWE are honoring the Show of Shows with WWE 2K14’s all-new single player campaign, the 30 Years of WrestleMania Mode.’

‘We’re broadening our focus, with a nostalgic game play mode that covers nearly three decades of WWE history with more than 45 historic, groundbreaking and legendary matches.’

Following Young’s decision to come out 2K Sports took to Twitter to congratulate him and mention his inclusion in the game.

‘We’d like to congratulate @DarrenYoungWWE on his brave personal announcement and welcome him to the #WWE2K14 roster!’ 2K Sports posted – with a link to an image of how Young will appear in the game.

Young came out during an interview with TMZ on August 16, later telling NBC that it had felt like the right time to do it.

‘I felt like it was the right place and the right time and I feel that by coming out, I’m going to make a big difference in a lot of people’s lives,’ he said.

‘I’m in love, and I wrestle for one of the greatest organizations in the world, the WWE, and I’m a lucky man.
