British soap Hollyoaks is to begin a new transgender storyline next month.

Show regular Blessing Chambers, played by Modupe Adyeye, will reveal she is a trans woman in May.

She admits to having spent time in a young offenders’ institution before she moved to Hollyoaks to start a new life.

And as she reveals the truth, Chambers’ family come looking for her and hire a private investigator. They have not seen her since her transition.

Adeyeye said: ‘I found researching the character of Blessing really inspiring and I hope that her story of a young trans woman who is loud and feisty and unapologetic proves to be a good role model.

‘I hope that the people who need to be touched by her story will be.’

Show writers were influenced by journalist and trans rights activist Paris Lees, who spent eight months in a young offenders institution when she was 16.

The soap writers also worked with The Gender Trust and All About Trans to ensure a sensitive and realistic portrayal of the storyline.

They also said they were inspired by trans actress Laverne Cox, who is currently starring in Netflix prison-based series Orange Is The New Black.
