In Hong Kong, size matters.

The city boasts five of the world’s top 30 tallest buildings, including the recently opened ICC which holds the Ritz-Carlton hotel and O-zone, the highest bar in the world on the 118^thfloor!

The world’s largest outdoor, seated Buddha (affectionately known as the Big Buddha), can be found on Lantau Island, just a short train ride and exhilerating 30 minute cable journey away.

Another exciting ride can be found at the Peak Tram which is the world’s steepest tram ride, whisking you up to Victoria Peak for spectacular views over Hong Kong Harbour both day and night

Every evening Victoria Harbour is lit up in the world’s largest permanent light and sound which illuminates all the erections straddling both sides of the water.

Other major sights includes the fascinating 10,000 Buddhas monastery in Sha Tin with the stairs up to the temple lined with some of the campest looking Buddhas you’ll ever see! Explore some of the murkier side of Hong Kong history in the beautifully landscaped Kowloon Walled City Park.

Hong Kong is also home to some other world records… the longest suspension bridge for road and rail, the tallest set of revolving doors and the most expensively built toilet constructed in pure gold! And it’s just a short ferry ride away to Macau which has the world’s largest casino at the swanky Venetian Hotel.

Keep some money to indulge in Hong Kong’s LGBT nightlife. It may not be the world’s largest it is certainly big enough to keep everyone happy. The most popular bars on Hong Kong Island include T:me, Zoo and Volume with its legendary free vodka Wednesdays! Dance the night away at Propaganda or at Chicken Feet Disco – the monthly theme party. There are also a few bars on the Kowloon peninsula attracting a more local and bear crowd!

With a hot and humid climate for most of the year it’s important that there are places to cool off and HK has plenty of pleasant beaches including a few gay ones. The most popular are on HK Island at Middle Bay and South Bay and also there is a fine stretch of clean sand at Cheung Sha.

There are lots of activities going on throughout the year for the LGBT community with a lot centered around the Pink Season which runs from October to December. The highlights include Floatilla (it’s like gay pride on boats), a two week LGBT Film Festival, Gay Days Asia go to Disneyland and Ocean Park, Mr Gay Hong Kong competition and the Gay Pride Parade.

For those who arrive in HK with space in the suitcase, there is ample opportunity to shop ‘til you drop in one of the hundreds of malls or markets. For cheap bargains or a 'copy watch', Kowloon offers a number of bustling markets. By day there is the Ladies Market, which despite its name sells gents items too, and the famous Temple Street night market which comes alive from about 7pm until midnight and also has fortune tellers and opera singers lining the streets. Be prepared for the crowds as these markets are in areas which are the world’s most densely populated!

And if you like to keep your mouth full HK has it all. Local Cantonese cuisine, international fare, street food and Michelin restaurants. There really is something for every taste and budget.
