The LGBTI group in the US has slammed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump after his win in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday (9 February) night.

‘Donald Trump has pandered his way to the top of the field by opposing the most basic protections for LGBT people and supporting Kim Davis-style discrimination against LGBT people,’ said Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin.

‘What’s more, despite being married three times himself, this is a candidate who says he looks forward to appointing justices who would overturn marriage equality for loving same-sex couples. Donald Trump’s calculated efforts to use division, fear and bigotry to score political points is as dangerous as it is vile.’

Trump – who has said he would ‘strongly consider’ appointing Supreme Court justices who would overturn the court’s June ruling legalizing gay marriage nationwide – took the Granite State with 34% of the vote.

Griffin then reiterated HRC’s endorsement of Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton, who won the first primary in Iowa but lost New Hampshire to Bernie Sanders by a 20% margin.

‘Hillary Clinton is the candidate we can count on to defeat Trump – or whichever one of these backwards anti-LGBT candidates emerges as the Republican nominee,’ he said.

Clinton has said she would put LGBTI equality ‘on the top of my priority list as president.’
