February is such a downer. Winter seems like it has gone on forever, spring still a long way away and it's ages until the next major holiday.

But there's nothing flat about today because it's Shrove Tuesday - the one day of the year when gorging yourself on breakfast food from morning 'til night is not just acceptable, it's mandatory.

It's the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, and pancakes are traditionally eaten because they are made out of sugar, fat, flour and eggs - ingrediants which were restricted during the ritual fasting associated with the Christian run-up to Easter.
