Jonathan Groff dishes about making out with Neil Patrick Harris, as Hedwig, during Tony Awards rehearsals
11 June 2014

During Sunday night’s Tony Awards, Neil Patrick Harris kissed fiance David Burtka on the mouth during his electrifying performance of Sugar Daddy from Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

But during his rehearsal of the number earlier in the day, those lips belonged to Looking star Jonathan Groff.

According to a recap of the rehearsal by Vulture, Harris climbed the speaker stacks, dropped the mike, went out into the audience, gave a lap dance or two, says ‘Watch this!’ and kisses a guy in the mosh pit – who turns out to be a surprised Groff.

At a Tony Awards after-party later that night Groff said: ‘He made out with me! It was amazing! … I went home, and I was like, "Oh my God, I have glitter between my teeth!"’

During the actual show, Harris took off Samuel L. Jackson’s glasses and licked them, gave a lap dance to Sting and sat on Kevin Bacon’s lap before ending with the Burtka kiss.

Of Harris’ antics as Hedwig, the show’s sound designer Tim O’Heir said: ‘It’s whatever Hedwig wants, because Neil is gone at that point. He won’t remember a thing tomorrow. The persona will take over.’
