Openly gay Tiawanese chatshow host Kevin Tsai has gone over the 14 million follwers mark with 14,095,863 fans on Sina Weibo, the Chinese Twitter. This means he has more followers that Rihanna (13,706,466), Britney Spears (13,274,225) and President Barack Obama (12,607,579) do on Twitter.
Tsai, whose Chinese name is Cai Kangyong hosts Kangxi Lai Le (Here Comes Kangxi), a late night comedy talk show that has run since 2004. The show is broadcast from Taiwan but popular with Chinese audiences all over because of its relaxed and open approach to discussing taboo subjects.
One of China's few openly gay media personalities, Tsai came out on a TV show in 2002 and has spoken out for LGBT rights in Taiwan. Last December he won a LGBT Salut award at China's inaugural Rainbow Awards for positive LGBT role models in the media.
Tsai won the Rainbow Award partly due to his involvement in last year's Lu Liping affair. Lu, a Christian movie actress who spoke out in support of her pastor's homophobic statements found herself at the end of a public outcry against her. This was largely due to posts on Weibo by Tsai.
'All the cast and crew you've worked with, the media folks that have written about you, the people who watch your movies and your supporters - do you know how many gay people there are among them? I don't care what religion you're of, but from the basic position of humanity, is it right for you to be fanning hate on a group of people who have made you who you are today?' Tsai said in a post that was re-posted 100,000 times in one night. The story was then picked up by China's mainstream media, with an anchor on CCTV news even decrying Lu's comments.
The most popular user on Weibo is actress Yao Chen with over 17 million followers, but the world's most popular microblogger is Lady Gaga with over 19 million followers.
