Neil Patrick Harris has announced he will marry his long-term partner David Burtka, after being engaged for seven years.

The happy couple and parents of two children Harper and Gideon are hoping to tie the knot as soon as they can.

It follows the US Supreme Court overturning the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8.

‘Certainly, we have children and marriage is an appropriate thing to do [as] a part of their well being, so I’m sure it will be inevitable—and awesome!’ the ‘How I Met Your Mother’ actor told E! News.

He’s unsure of whether it will be in California or in New York, both states where gay marriage is now legal.

‘We’re about to move to New York so it’s a tricky situation,’ Harris said. ‘I don’t know if it would be an east coast or west coast thing.’

On the Supreme Court rulings, he said it was an ‘inevitability’.

‘I’m not one who jumps around and cheers and screams because I thought that was inevitable and was going to happen,’ Harris continued.

‘It’s logical. If you look at public opinion polls, everyone, the majority of people, are very for people that fall in love with each other being able to own that.’
