No player in the history of the National Football League has ever publicly come out as gay during their playing days.
If one ever decides to do so, New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma isn't so sure it would go over so well.
'I think he would not be accepted as much as we think he would be accepted,' Vilma told the NFL Network.
But, he adds: 'I don't want people to just naturally assume, oh, we're all homophobic. That's really not the case.'
It seems to all come down to the locker room in the eyes of the 30-year-old player who has played in the league for eight years.
Says Vilma: 'Imagine if he's the guy next to me, and you know, I get dressed, naked, taking a shower, the whole nine, and it just so happens he looks at me, how am I supposed to respond?'
