Peru Catholic cardinal suggests lawmaker is gay for wanting civil unions bill
Peru’s Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne has implied that civil unions bill author Carlos Bruce is a homosexual for supporting LGBT equality
Peruvian Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, archbishop of Lima, has used a radio appearance to attack the author of a bill which would allow same-sex couples to enter into civil unions – implying that lawmaker Carlos Bruce is gay.
‘If a person has made some alternate choices, that’s their problem and he can do whatever he wants on his own,’ Cardinal Cipriani said on the Dialogues of Faith program on Peru’s RPP network in a swipe at the Congressman.
‘But I don’t think that we’ve elected congresspeople just so they can justify their own life choices. I don’t think that’s right.’
Bruce, who is divorced with two sons, later told RPP that he would not dignify such comments with a response.
‘I will not answer such baseness,’ Bruce told Diario Correo.
The cardinal’s comments resulted in Peruvian tabloid La Razon to run the headline ‘Cipriani pulls Bruce out of the closet’ on its front page.
