Principal in Washington DC comes out as gay at high school's Pride Day event
Pete Cahall: 'I am a proud gay man who just happens to be the principal of Wilson High School'
Pride Day at Wilson High School in Washington DC took on even deeper meaning this week when the school’s principal decided to come out as gay in front of the student body.
Pete Cahall addressed the students during a lunchtime rally and said: ‘I want to say publicly for the first time because of your leadership, care and support that I am a proud gay man who just happens to be the principal of Wilson High School.’
The Washington Post reports that Cahall was flanked by Washington DC Mayor Vincent C Gray and the District’s first openly gay councilmember David Catania as he made the announcement and was shaking with emotion.
He was cheered by students.
‘I just turned 50,’ he said. ‘I’m tired for hiding.’
The school’s Gay-Straight Alliance tweeted its congratulations after the rally: ‘Congrats Principal Cahall for coming out as a gay man! We are so proud of you!’
