Southaven, Mississippi's third largest city, has a gay mayor. Greg Davis was forced to come out this past week after receipts showed he asked the city to pay for multiple expenses, including a purchase at a gay adult store.
"At this point in my life and in my career, while I have tried to maintain separation between my personal and public life, it is obvious that this can no longer remain the case," Davis said to the Commercial Appeal. "While I have performed my job as mayor, in my opinion, as a very conservative, progressive individual -- and still continue to be a very conservative individual -- I think that it is important that I discuss the struggles I have had over the last few years when I came to the realization that I am gay."
The revelation came during an audit of the mayor's expense account. According to the newspaper Davis had the city pay for expensive dinners at a local restaurant, thousands of dollars of liquor, and $67 at at Priape, a gay adult store in Toronto. Davis was in Canada on a recruitment trip.
The embattled Republican, who has been mayor since 1997, is under investigation for $170,000 in dubious expenses. Another Commercial Appeal article shows Davis to be a profligate tipper. Last June, for a $37.88 meal --- grilled fish and a martini --- he left the waiter a $100 tip.
As of now, he has no intention of stepping down.
"At this point, my goal is to ensure that for the next year and a half that the city continues to grow," he said. "I will evaluate whether I will run again as mayor at a later time."
