On last week's episode of the ABC sitcom Suburgatory, faculty member Mr. Wolfe came out to the entire student body in the middle of the cafeteria during lunch.
For actor Rex Lee, the character came along just as he finished a six-year run as Ari Gold's gay assistant, Lloyd, on HBO's Entourage.
'When Entourage was coming to an end, I was worried about what my next job would be,' Lee tells Gay Star News. 'The fact that this one came up so quickly was a godsend, frankly. I do love the show and I love playing Mr. Wolfe. It's been amazing.'
The out actor says he had no qualms about playing another gay role.
'When I was first coming out, all my friends told me I couldn't pass for straight or bi so I shouldn't even bother trying,' he explains. 'So I didn't bother trying.'
Even though both Lloyd and Mr. Wolfe are gay, the style of comedy on Suburgatory is far different from Entourage.
'I will admit that it's slightly difficult, for me, just because I could fall into being Lloyd very easily,' Lee says. 'With Mr. Wolfe, it takes a little more thought. Because a lot of the characters are a little bit heightened, it's sort of like a tightrope walk for me to be heightened as I need to be but still keep it grounded in reality. So it's tricky.'
Lee was out publicly at the start of Entourage in 2005. He is happy to see that so many other male performers have come out since then including Neil Patrick Harris, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Ricky Martin.
'I think it's a great thing,' he says. 'Somebody a long time ago said the whole point of coming out is once everybody is out, then straight America has no choice but to see that their brothers and uncles and cousins and friends are all represented in the gay community. That's the moment when people are going to say, 'I don't have it in my heart to hate people that I'm already close to.''
