Good Morning America weather anchor says he wants small ceremony
Sam Champion, the Good Morning America anchor who came out publicly and announced his engagement last week, says he wants to have a small wedding.
Champion, a guest co-host on ABC’s The View Friday (12 October), was asked about his engagement to photographer Rubem Robierb which he said will take place at the end of December.
‘Neither one of us is very good at planning right now and this is a lot,’ Champion admitted. ‘I envision like five people with a bottle of champagne walking to the beach having a wedding. He’s from Brazil so everything on the beach.’
The engagement was reported in a New York Times profile on Champion’s friend, MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts, who married longtime partner Patrick Abner earlier this month.
Champion shared details of how the couple found each other and how Robierb proposed.
‘We met at a New Year’s party of mutual friends,’ he said. ‘We’d been going out for awhile. We had kind of been talking about (marriage). You kind of feel it out a little bit because no one wants to hear no. So at the following New Year’s party, you know when everyone makes a toast, when he started to speak – I thought it was one of those toasts and I’ve got to think of something to say – then he asked me to marry him.’
Champion added: ‘Even though we had talked about it, it was a beautiful, beautiful thing. I’m the luckiest guy.’
