An 18 year old Florida schoolgirl is being treated like a pedophile after the parents of her 15 year old girlfriend went to school authorities and the police.

Sebastian River High School student Kaitlyn Hunt was charged with two felony counts of ‘lewd and lascivious battery on a child 12 – 16 years of age’ in February over her consensual relationship with her unnamed girlfriend who was a member of the same school basketball team.

Hunt, who prior to her expulsion had been voted ‘most school spirit’ by her fellow students, has been offered a plea deal of two years house arrest followed by a year of probation but as an 18 year old if she accepts the deal the charge will stay on her permanent record for the rest of her life – something that could limit her ability to find work.

Hunt’s family have set up a petition to stop the prosecution of their daughter which has already been signed by nearly 22,000 people and say their daughter’s girlfriend’s parents are seeking to destroy their daughter’s life because they cannot accept their own daughter’s sexuality.

‘They are out to destroy my daughter, because they feel like she "made" their daughter gay,’ mother Kelley Hunt Smith told Examiner.com.

‘They see being gay as wrong and they blame my daughter. Of course, I see it 100 percent differently. I don’t see or label these girls as gay. They are teenagers in high school experimenting with their sexuality with mutual consent and even if their daughter is gay, who cares? She is still their daughter.’

Hunt’s uncle Andrew Kenneth Gay posted in the Free Kate Facebook group that the age difference probably hadn’t even entered into the girls’ minds as Hunt’s girlfriend had been accademically advanced to the point that she took classes with seniors at the school.

‘The two girls were about 3 years and 7 months apart in age, and Kaitlyn turned 18 in August of last year,’ Gay wrote.

‘Kate, however, is a very small, young-looking senior in high school, and her girlfriend was [a] much taller freshman, older in appearance, an [International Baccalaureate] student enrolled in classes with upper classmen, and played on the same Varsity basketball team as Kate.’

‘They were peers in the same social circle with the same friends. I’m not sure age ever entered into either of their minds. Kate was later kicked off the basketball team for fear that two girls dating each other would cause "drama."’

After Hunt was kicked off the basketball team her girlfriend’s parents went to the school board to seek her expulsion and then contacted Indian River County Police.

Police secretly recorded a phone call between the two girls in which they discussed their relationship and used that as the basis of charging Hunt.

Hunt’s parents’ appealed her expelsion sucessfully before two judges so her girlfriend’s parents took the issue to the county school board which ordered that she finish her schooling at a different school.

Hunt’s case is now being circulated by the Anonymous online collective.
