Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie are the unlikely subjects of The New Yorker's marriage equality magazine cover out today.
The famous puppets - officially best friends - are seen cuddling as they watch a television set with an image of the nine US Supreme Court justices on it. the cover is titled 'Bert and Ernie’s Moment of Joy.'
The cover was submitted, unsolicited, to The New Yorker by Jack Hunter who tells the magazine: 'It’s amazing to witness how attitudes on gay rights have evolved in my lifetime. This is great for our kids, a moment we can all celebrate.'
Two years ago, there were rumors that the character of Bert was about to come out of the closet as gay.
The Sesame Street Workshop denied the reports and said the characters of Bert and Ernie 'remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.'
