The filmmaker who brought viewers the scripted series The L Word and the reality series The Real L Word is ressurecting her lesbian-themed franchise with a documentary called L Word Mississippi: Hate the Sin.

Showtime, which aired both series, announced today that it will air producer Ilene Chaiken's latest work about the daily struggles of a group of Southern lesbians on 8 August.

The 90-minute film, directed by Lauren Lazin, spotlights the unique challenges of being lesbians in the religious, conservative deep South.

Living outside progressive metropolitan areas in America, these lesbians endure bigotry, bullying, sexism and racism as they try and live among their predominantly straight neighbors.

The film journeys deep into Bible Belt towns in Mississippi like Laurel, Gulfport and Hattiesburg to tell the stories of a dozen women.

The subjects include a newly out-and-proud former pastor banished from her church and a white mother would accept her daughter’s black lover, if only she were a man.

Others are a former life-long lesbian struggling to 'pray the gay away' and hoping to do the same for her openly gay son and a couple grappling with both infertility and female-to-male gender transitioning.

Chaiken’s drama series The L Word ran for six seasons on Showtime and followed a group of Los Angeles-based friends as they navigated careers, families, friendships, inner-struggles and romantic entanglements. It was followed by three seasons of The Real L Word, an unscripted series which followed a similar group of lesbians at work and at play in LA and NY.

Showtime also announced this week that it will be re-airing the entire seasons of The L Word as well as the US version of Queer as Folk, the male-themed series that ran for five seasons on Showtime.

All seasons of both shows will air on Showtime Showcase from June through November.

From 2 June 2 through 30 June, back-to-back episodes of both series will be offered Monday through Friday at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Then, starting on 3 July, back-to-back episodes will air every Thursday night through 13 November.

Subscribers can also catch up on the full seasons of Queer as Folk and the six seasons of The L Word on Showtime on Demand and the network’s authenticated service Showtime Anytime starting this summer.
