Meet Jonathan Allen, a 20-year-old from Tennessee. On his 18th birthday, his parents decided to kick him out for being gay.

An incredible opera singer, he decided to show his family they had missed out on supporting their gifted son by performing on America’s Got Talent.

‘My parents, they didn’t really support my lifestyle,’ Allen said.

‘I haven’t seen my parents in about two and a half years. I love them with all my heart. I don’t know if they still love me. It’s been difficult and music is what makes me feel like I belong.’

He added: ‘In my darkest moments I can escape through music. I want them to see what I’ve done with my life, and I’m not a bad person for being who I am.

‘I want them to see that. I just hope I can make them proud.’

After the performance, judge Howie Mandel said: ‘Your own family disowned you, but with your talent, this show has become your family, and we’d like to say “welcome home”.

‘We love you. We accept you. And we’re so proud that you came here.’
