Will Young: Singer, songwriter, product designer?

Gay pop star shares his love for creating 'naff' merchandise

Will Young: Singer, songwriter, product designer?

Will Young wants to create an ironing board emblazoned with his image that loses its clothes as it heats up.

The 'Keep On' hitmaker is heavily involved in the creation of his merchandise and he loves coming up with 'naff' ideas for new products, and his dream fan item is the naughty piece of domestic apparatus.

He told BANG Showbiz: 'I have a lot of involvement with my products.

'The thing I really want is an ironing board where the clothes come off [with the heat from the iron] but they were too expensive to make.

'I was thinking about old school cake tins, because I found this old cake tin I bought with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip on it, it's the campest thing, I bought it for about £5 in Cornwall. I thought, "Oh my god! Cake tins! That would be brilliant." There's something a bit naff about merchandise so you've got to embrace it.'

On his most recent tour, fans could splash out on a tea towel baring a naked image of the pop singer, and while Will 'loved' the piece of merchandise he is unhappy his penis is not on display.

He said: 'I love the tea towels. The only thing is they make me look like I don't have a penis. I don't know what they've done, they've airbrushed it or something, but I look like an alien without a penis.

'The biggest one we had was the pen where the clothes came off, and we did a brochure with a cut-out Will where you could make your own cardboard Will doll and dress it – I enjoyed that.'
