His movie Keep the Lights On is up for four awards on Saturday

When the Oscars are being handed out in Hollywood on Sunday (24 February), Ira Sachs will be on a plane flying back to his home in New York City.

He came to Los Angeles this week for another awards ceremony - Saturday's Independent Spirits Awards - where his film, Keep the Lights On, is up for four awards.

Marc Friedland: ‘I thought it merited some iconic stature’

When Daniel-Day Lewis or Anne Hathaway walk off the stage on Sunday at the Academy Awards (is there anyone who thinks they won't win?), they will be clutching an Oscar in one hand and very likely a gold envelope in the other.

That envelope was designed by Marc Friedland.

Believe it or not, it was not until three years ago that the Academy began using its own specially-designed envelope for presenters to pull a name out of and announce: 'And the Oscar goes to ...' '

'I feel like I won the lottery'

At Sunday night's Golden Globe Awards, Victor Garber took some ribbing from George Clooney and others when he arrived to the stage after Argo producer Grant Heslov had begun his acceptance speech.

The fllm, in which Garber portrays a Canadian ambassador in Iran who agrees to hide a group of Americans, won the Best Picture-Drama prize and was also nominated for an Academy Award for best picture.

As he rides that success, Garber is also one of the stars of the new NBC drama Deception which premiered last week and airs on Monday nights in the US.

Gay writer Tony Kushner nominated for screenplay for Lincoln

While such best picture nominees as Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Life of Pi dominate the major categories of Academy Award nominations announced this morning (10 January), LGBT movie fans had particular reason to cheer with the AIDS documentary How to Survive a Plague getting a nod in the documentary category.

The movie, directed by David France, tells the story of AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) and gives viewers a front-row seat to the epic day-to-day battles that ultimately resulted in AIDS no longer being a death sentence.

Sixth Sense star: 'New worlds have opened up for me in my age group'

It's been more than a decade since Haley Joel Osment saw dead people in the film The Sixth Sense and earned himself an Academy Award nomination at the age of 11.

Now 24, the young actor continues his transition into adult roles with Sassy Pants, an independent film in which he plays the young boyfriend of a man whose teenage daughter moves in with the couple to get away from her overbearing mother.

Performance that starred Brad Pitt and George Clooney will air on radio to celebrate Gay Pride Month

The pro-gay play ‘8’, led by Hollywood actors George Clooney and Brad Pitt, will be heard again across American radio stations in June.

A recording of the 3 March performance, which also starred gay actors Jane Lynch and George Takei, will be played on 90.7 KPFK in Southern California, 89.7 WGBH in Boston, 91.5 WBEZ in Chicago, 89.3 WPFW in Washington, D.C. and over 100 other stations nationwide.

It will air on radio as part of the Gay Pride Month celebrations.

King's Speech actor is set to star in biopics of Noël Coward and Oscar Wilde

Oscar winner Colin Firth will play gay playwright, actor and composer Noël Coward and the best friend and confidant of Oscar Wilde in forthcoming biopics.

In details announced at the Cannes Film Festival, the King's Speech actor is due to star as Oscar Wilde's gay friend Reginald 'Reggie' Turner in the upcoming Oscar Wilde biopic, This Happy Prince.

Chet Haze 'humbled' by gay attention but makes clear that he is straight

When Tom Hanks won an Academy Award in 1994 for playing a gay man with AIDS in the film Philadelphia, he gave a moving speech in which he paid tribute to two men -  high school drama teacher and a classmate - who he described as 'two of the finest gay Americans.'

'I wish my babies could have the same kind of teachers, the same kind of friends,' the actor said, his voice choked with emotion.

Beginners star pays visit to talk show host after winning Academy Award

After winning the Academy Award for his performance as a gay man in Beginners, Christopher Plummer celebrated at the Governors Ball with his wife and friends then called it a night.

'I'm too old to go and do the town,' the 82-year-old actor told Ellen DeGeneres in an interview this week. 'I'm too old to roll in at 10 a.m. like I used to.'

Oldest acting winner in history for performance as gay man out late in life

Christopher Plummer became the oldest winner of an acting Oscar in the history of the Academy Awards on Sunday (26 February).

The 82-year-old received a standing ovation when his name was announced as the winner of the supporting actor award for his performance in Beginners.

'You're only two years older than me darling,' Plummer said to his Oscar statue at the 84th annual Academy Awards. 'Where have you been all my life?'

Humorous spots debut during the Academy Awards telecast

Ellen DeGeneres went back in time for some of her new JC Penney commercials which premiered during the Academy Awards telecast on Sunday (26 February).

DeGeneres went back to the Old West in the first spot where she terrifies fellow customers in a store when she tries to pay for an item and with coupons.

In the second spot, she appeared to be part of a 1950s sitcom which showed a couple in separate beds then cut to DeGeneres in a third bed looking confused.

Top acting Oscars won by Meryl Streep and Jean Dujardin

The silent film The Artist fended off eight other nominees to take the best picture prize at the 84th Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood on Sunday (26 February).

The top award was among a trio of major awards for the film which also won the best actor award for French star Jean Dujardin and best director for French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius.

Five different spots will air during Sunday's awards telecast

Ellen DeGeneres has revealed that commercials she has made for JC Penney will premiere during the Academy Awards telecast on Sunday (26 February).

'I can't tell you how excited I am about them,' DeGeneres said to her talk show audience Friday. 'There are five different ones that run throughout the Oscars.  I had so much fun making them. I'm proud of them. ... They're beautifully done.'

Black tells Gay Star News there has been 'hugs and tears' but work not done

After Dustin Lance Black won an Academy Award for the screenplay he wrote for Milk, he did more with his newfound fame than write and direct more movies.

His Oscar win came less than three months after California voters passed Proposition 8 and he took a leading role in the fight for marriage equality as one of the founding members of the American Foundation for Equal Rights.

Christopher Plummer has received another award nomination for his role as an elderly gay man in Beginners, but this time it's for Hollywood's most coveted statuette, the Oscar.

The Canadian actor is up for a gong in the best supporting actor category and is up against Kenneth Branagh, Jonah Hill, Nick Nolte and Max von Sydow.
