Thousands of LGBTs and their allies marched and rallied in the state capitals of Queensland and Victoria on Saturday in the last protest actions in support of same-sex marriage that will be held in Brisbane and Melbourne before Australian voters go to the polls.

Melbourne Greens MP Adam Bandt told protesters at the Melbourne rally that they should be proud of themselves for bringing the Australian public around to their way of thinking.

Youngest Member of Parliament in Australia increases the pressure on opposition leader Tony Abbott to allow his MPs a free conscience vote on same-sex marriage

A Member of Parliament (MP) from Tony Abbott's socially conservative Liberal party in Australia has opened up about his support for same-sex marriage.

'I support the right of same-sex couples to have their loving and committed relationships recognized in state-sanctioned marriage,' said 23-year-old Wyatt Roy, parliament's youngest MP.

However Roy is currently barred from voting for same-sex marriage legislation because Abbott is not allowing opposition Liberal-National coalition MPs a conscience vote on the matter.

Rise Up Australia made the claim through social media, writing, ‘Looking back 12 months, MP Adam Bandt, a self-proclaimed homosexual, indicated the “Gay Marriage Act” would be acquired by stealth.’

Australia’s Greens party will put forward another bill to introduce marriage equality after being inspired by a successful vote on the issue in the British House of Commons

The Australian Greens say a successful vote on marriage equality in the British House of Commons has inspired them to move forward with another bill on marriage equality despite previous bills being defeated in the Parliament when the Australian Opposition refused its members a conscience vote.

The House of Commons passed its bill on Tuesday in a vote of 400 to 175 votes.

A faction of Labor MPs met last night to speak-out about the movement towards gay marriage in Australia.

The House of Representatives yesterday published an overwhelmingly positive report into two bills before parliament that propose legalizing gay marriage.

In response Labor MPs gathered to demand an end to the bills, saying support for same-sex marriage was bad for the party’s re-election chances in 2013.
