NBC on Friday (10 May) cancelled its gay-themed comedy The New Normal after one season.

Ratings never really took off for the Ryan Murphy-produced show which sometimes had storylines that reflected real life with marriage equality currently a front-burner issue in the US.

Justin Bartha's character's membership revoked for 'homosexual conduct'

The New Normal, the NBC comedy about a gay couple starting a family, is airing an episode this week (26 March) that focuses on the Boy Scouts of America's ban on gay members and leaders.

The episode has the character of David, a gay physician  played by Justin Bartha, volunteering to help out a friend by chaperoning an overnight scouts camping trip.

He agrees to participate despite the concern his TV executive hubby Bryan (Andrew Rannells) who is concerned about the BSA's anti-gay ban.

Stars like Darren Criss, Andrew Rannells and the cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills got all the red carpet attention Saturday (9 February) at the Family Equality Council's awards dinner in Los Angeles as honoree Chris Kluwe slipped by virtually unnoticed.

But by the end of evening, everyone was talking about NFL player Kluwe whose visibility as an LGBT activist grew exponentially last September when he blasted Maryland Assembly Delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr. in a withering, profanity-laced letter.

He's played a gay man on stage in The Book of Mormon and plays a gay man on TV in The New Normal.

But on HBO's Girls, Andrew Rannells is playing a character who is wondering if he might be bisexual instead of gay.

Off screen, Rannells does no such wondering.

'I personally have never had sex with a woman,' he tells New York magazine’s Vulture blog. 'I’m more of what you call gold-star gay. I’m purebred.'

Television guru also produces The New Normal and American Horror Story

The premise of the NBC comedy The New Normal is a gay couple played by Andrew Rannells and Justin Bartha) planning to welcome their first child into the world.

On Christmas Day (25 December), the show's co-creator Ryan Murphy and his husband David Miller beat the fictional couple to the delivery room when they became the parents of a son.

The couple sent the birth announcement out to friends via email, according to E!Online.

Sitcom about gay couple having baby via surrogate will premiere this fall

One Million Moms, the anti-gay group that has protested Ellen DeGeneres, gay characters in comic books, rainbow Oreas, and various retail chains for gay-themed advertising, now has NBC in its sights.

The subgroup of the American Family Association is asking NBC to drop its plans to air the sitcom The New Normal this fall. The show  is about a blended family created by a gay couple and the surrogate mother having their baby.
