Politicians from the opposition Labor and Greens parties and an openly gay candidate from the ruling Liberal party will march with Australian Marriage Equality in Melbourne’s Midsumma Pride March on Sunday

Same-sex marriage campaign Australian Marriage Equality (AME) will be joined by politicians from all stripes of politics this year when they march in Melbourne’s LGBTI pride march.

AME's contingent will bring together politicians from Labor, the Liberals and the Greens parties to show bipartisan support for the right of Australian same-sex couples to marry.

A group of Australian senators from the Liberal, Greens and Labor parties have formed a cross-party working group to work towards the legalization of same-sex marriage in Australia

Senators from the three largest political factions in the Australian Parliament have today announced the formation of a cross-party working group to push for the legalization of same-sex marriage in Australia.

At around 10.30am this morning the Greens' Senator Sarah Hason-Young, Liberal Senator Sue Boyce, and Labor Senator Louise Pratt signed a pledge of co-operation that will form the basis for the working group.

An investigation of legal issues around allowing same-sex couples to marry in the state of Tasmania has found that there are no legal barriers to Australian states doing so while a ban on same-sex marriage exists nationally

The Tasmanian Law Reform Institute has advised that there are no legal barriers to stop Australian states from marrying same-sex couples while an Australian federal government ban on same-sex marriage remains in place.

The institute gave the advice in a report it has compiled to address concerns raised by members of the Tasmanian Legislative Council as to whether states even had the power to pass laws on marriage since the passing of Australia’s national Marriage Act in 1961.

Australian Workers Union boss Paul Howes will tonight become the most prominent person within the Australian Labor Party (ALP) to call for his party to vote as a block in favor of same-sex couples being allowed to marry.

Howes released a speech he intends to give tonight at an Australian Marriage Equality (AME) event ‘The Future of Marriage Equality Forum’ at Sydney’s Beauchamp Hotel at 5.30pm today at which Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s sister and Liberal Party City of Sydney councilor Christine Forster will also speak.

Australian Workers Union national secretary Paul Howes, a key power broker in the right wing of the Australian Labor Party, has told GSN that it is vital that his party defend the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) from any attempt by the Australian Government to interfere with it’s ability to pass its own laws.

‘Labor has always been the party that has supported self government in the territories,’ Howes said, taking a question from GSN.

Almost a thousand people an hour are signing a petition calling on Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott to refrain from interfering when the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government seeks to legalize same-sex marriage next month.

Over 5,500 have signed the petition on Change.org in the first six hours it has been live on the website.

Tony Abbott's victory as the new Australian Prime Minister appeared to be a death knell for same sex marriage in Australia.

Abbott, who has 'deeply religious' Catholic views, has been a vocal critic of same sex marriage, once even calling it 'The fashion of the moment' - despite having a lesbian sister.

However, there is still a chance that same sex marriage may be discussed, and even voted on, in Parliament.

The Director General of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has categorically ruled out moving the Sochi Winter Olympics to another country over Russia’s so-called gay propaganda ban in a letter to Australian Greens leader Senator Christine Milne.

In the letter, which has been obtained by GSN, the IOC’s Christophe De Kepper said  it was impossible to move the games at such a late stage.

Melbourne Greens MP Adam Bandt told protesters at the Melbourne rally that they should be proud of themselves for bringing the Australian public around to their way of thinking.

Australian supporters of marriage equality have picketed the electorate office of Opposition leader Tony Abbott to mark the signing into law of same-sex marriage by French President Francois Hollande.

Over 120 people gathered today outside Abbott’s Manly electorate office to highlight the fact that Australia is increasingly out of step with its international peers, with same-sex marriage legislation passing in New Zealand last month and France becoming the 14th country to allow same-sex couples.

The Greens party in Australia are pushing for another vote on same-sex marriage before the general election in September.

Greens MP and deputy leader Adam Bandt is campaigning for his Marriage Equality Amendment Bill to be voted on in the House of Representative on 6 June.

Last September a similar bill was voted down by 98 MPs to 42 in the house.

‘It will depend on the view of the post-election party room.’
