Star-studded British Student Pride debate also discusses bullying, female invisibility, trans issues and marriage

Homophobia in sport and education were among the issues to dominate the debate at Student Pride in Brighton today, with NBA basketball star John Amaechi describing sports bosses as ‘stupid’.

Early estimations suggest over 1,000 students from across the UK, including foreign students studying in Britain, are attending the event at the Dome in Brighton. Gay Star News is one of the media sponsors.

Details of Robert Champion Jr death on school’s band bus emerge. Federal investigation demanded

In late November of last year, Robert Champion Jr was found unresponsive on his school’s band bus. His college, Florida A&M, a historically black college, had just played its biggest football game against Bethune-Cookman. Police ruled the band member’s death a homicide.

His family, who met with the media this week, maintains he died from injuries sustained in a hazing ritual. Others point to his sexuality, and opposition to hazing, as the reasons why he was attacked.

New anti-LGBT constitution and laws in Hungary come into force – activists join protests

LGBT activists in Hungary have protested together with opposition parties against the new constitution that restricts marriage to heterosexuals and fails to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

The constitution came into force on 1 January.

Meanwhile a new Family Protection Bill (which is ‘cardinal law’ that requires a two-thirds majority in parliament, like the constitution, in order to be changed) has also come into force.

Sean McGhee and Richard Oakes join forces in new ‘post-punk, melancholic pop’ group

A gay vocalist and producer, Sean McGhee, has teamed up with Suede’s guitarist and songwriter Richard Oakes to form a new group, Artmagic.

Suede, a UK alternative rock band, had massive success from the 80s onwards.

McGhee – who has sung with Alanis Morissette and worked with Britney Spears, Robyn and the Sugababes – told Gay Star News how the musical project first came about.

About 60 people attended an education board meeting on Monday night (12 December) to speak against the proposed change in the Anoka-Hennepin school district of Minnesota.
