National Judy Garland Talent Search kicks off in US, with top prize of $10,000

News that a search has begun in the US to find the nation's best Judy Garland act is sure to send fans of the gay icon over the rainbow.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz in 2014, the National Judy Garland Talent Search hopes to find one finalist per US state to compete for the countrywide title.

Contestants, ranging from 18 to 45 years of age, will be judged based on their overall appearance and vocal talent.

The Naked Civil Servant actor to be honored during February award ceremony

Veteran actor John Hurt is to receive the award for outstanding contribution to cinema at the 2012 British Academy Film Awards ceremony next month.

His film, the British Cold War-era spy movie Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is also nominated for 11 awards.

On hearing the news, Hurt said: 'I know that film means a great deal to me but I had no idea that I meant so much to film.'

Oscar nominee to play photographer Robert Mapplethorpe

James Franco is set to add another gay role to his resume.

An Oscar nominee last year for 127 Hours, Franco has attached himself to a feature film about controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

Mapplethorpe was known for his large-scale, highly stylized black and white portraits of nude men and of flowers. Some of his work was so homoerotic that it resulted in controversy and debates about public funding in the arts.
