Television success has so far eluded the openly gay two-time Tony winner

Nathan Lane has been a huge star on Broadway for three decades now and appeared in such hit movies as The Birdcage, Austin Powers in Goldmember and this year's Mirror Mirror.

But what he has never manage to do is be one of the stars of a hit television series.

His NBC sitcom Encore! Encore, in which he played an opera singer who loses hos voice and moves home with his mother, lasted just 12 episodes on 1998. Then in 2003. he starred as a gay politician in the CBS sitcom Charlie Lawrence which ran for only six episodes.

But Ricky Martin is snubbed for his role in the revival of Evita

Nominations for the the 66th annual Tony Awards were announced on Tuesday (1 May) and Ricky Martin's much-heralded return to the Broadway stage in Evita did not result in a nod for the openly-gay superstar.

But out actress Cynthia Nixon, winner of the 2006 Tony for Rabbit Hole, is one of the favorites in the lead actress in a play category for her performance as a woman dying of cancer in Wit.

Martin, who earned a Drama Desk Award nomination for his performance as Che, last appeared on Broadway in 1996 in Les Miserables.
