The US state of Oklahoma will continue to discriminate against National Guard gay troops and their same-sex spouses.

Governor Mary Fallin issued a statement today, 6 October, announcing National Guard facilities, owned by the state, will not issue ID cards to the spouses of gay troops, even with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel's directive that all legally married service members are be treated like their straight peers.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel: 'It is now the department’s policy to treat all married military personnel equally'

The spouses of gay military personnel will now get the same benefits as those of heterosexual personnal, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced today.

The US Supreme Court's decision in June to strike down a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act cleared the way for the Pentagon to offer the benefits to same-sex partners as of 3 September.

'It is now the department’s policy to treat all married military personnel equally,' Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said in a written statement.

US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel came full circle Tuesday (25 June) with his appearance at a Pride reception at the Pentagon.

During his remarks, Hagel said that 'gay and lesbian service members and LGBT civilians are integral to America’s armed forces.'

He pointed out that their ranks include senior leaders like Acting Secretary of the Air Force Eric Fanning who was also in attendance and Brigadier General Tammy Smith who last year became the first openly gay general officer in the United States military.
