UK Culture Secretary and Equalities Minister Maria Miller says there will be a review into whether straight people will want a civil partnership

UK civil partnerships could be granted to straight couples, after senior minister Maria Miller acknowledged there should be a ‘review’ into the future of the unions.

Last night (16 May), the culture secretary and equalities minister said after lobbying by members of parliament over the status of civil partnerships, the government will ‘formally review’ their future.

Miller is opposed to giving civil partnerships to straight couples, which she has called ‘not a requirement’.

Peter Tatchell criticizes UK Equalities Minister Maria Miller for opposing civil partnerships for straight couples, saying it amounts to discrimination

Veteran LGBT rights advocate, Peter Tatchell said that the UK Equalities Minister, Maria Miller, is wrong to reject heterosexual civil partnerships.

He stated that the ban on heterosexual couples amounts to discrimination and that the minister defies public consultation, which backed straight equality.

‘The government’s decision to oppose the legalization of civil partnerships for heterosexual couples is hugely disappointing.

Cristian and Federico signed their civil union in London in 2010. Now they can apply for local benefits and local welfare

A local court in Milan has recognized a British civil partnership – the first time Italy has legally recognized a gay union from abroad.

Now the civil union between Cristian, a biologist, and Federico, an IT specialist, will be added to the Milan’s Registro delle Unioni Civili, a list of same-sex couples put in place by left-wing mayor Giuliano Pisapia.

The decision of the tribunal does not mean that Cristian and Federico’s civil partnership is now recognized by Italy.

A Christian Australian Labor Party candidate says allowing same-sex couples to marry would be one of his priorities if elected later this year

The Australian Labor Party candidate for the seat of Hume, Michael Pilbrow, has named legalizing same-sex marriage as one of his top priorities if elected.

Pilbrow, a Pentecostal Christian, told the Goulburn Post that he saw no problem with allowing same-sex couples to marry and said the current law interfered with the separation of church and state.

Equal rights campaigners are thrilled to be nominated for ‘Campaign of the Year’ and ‘People’s Choice’

Equal Marriage has been recognized for its efforts to legalize LGBT marriage in Scotland. The charity supported campaign has been listed for ‘Campaign of the Year’ and the ‘People’s Choice’ at the Scottish Charity Awards.

The campaign has been running since 2008 and aims to change the law to allow same sex couples to get married.

It also fights for faith and belief groups to conduct same-sex marriage and to end the requirement that transgender people must divorce before attaining Gender Recognition.

US state's governor has vowed to sign the approval into law when the general assembly go to the polls on 8 May

Delaware is to vote on whether they wish to become the 11th US state to pass same-sex marriage today (7 May).

The US state's Democrat-controlled Senate is expected to pass the bill after the General Assembly approved it several weeks ago.

Governor Jack Markell is an outspoken supporter of gay marriage and has vowed to sign the bill into law if it is cleared by the US senate.

State now the 11th in US to have marriage equality

The Delaware State Senate on Tuesday (7 May) passed a marriage equality bill in a 12-9 vote clearing the way for same-sex marriages to begin in the state this summer.

The senate chamber erupted in cheers after the vote which took place after three hours of heated rhetoric on both sides.

Similar legislation had already been approved by the House of Representatives which allowed Governor Jack Markell, an outspoken supporter of gay marriage, to quickly sign the bill in to law.

All New England states are to have same-sex marriage after Governor Lincoln Chafee passes the equal marriage bill into law

Rhode Island is set to become the 10th state to legalize same-sex marriage today (2 May).

While it is the last holdout among the other five New England states, the heavily Catholic state will join its neighbors when Governor Lincoln Chafee signs the bill into law at 6pm EDT.

The first weddings could occur on 1 August when the new law will take effect.

Same-sex marriage supporters renewed their fight to get it legalized this year, and the recent Senate vote was seen as the final test after the House easily passed the bill.

Civil unions between same-sex couples became legal in the American state of Colorado today

The first legally binding unions between same-sex couples began in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday 1 May) in Colorado.

Couples were lining-up since 2pm yesterday outside the municipal Webb Building Denver where civil union ceremonies were scheduled to be performed from 12.01 to 2am, The Denver Channel reports.

Australian Marriage Equality against a referendum on the issue, despite majority public support

Australian independent MP Tony Windsor has proposed that the nation say yes or no to gay marriage in a referendum in September.

Windsor suggests taking the issue 'out of the hands of the politicians' and letting the public vote on the issue on the day of the general election - 14 September.

The government is planning to hold a referendum on recognizing local government in the constitution on that day, so it would not be much of an extra cost to include an extra question on the ballot paper.

Members of the legislative assembly have voted 53 against, 42 in favor of introducing same-sex marriage

Northern Ireland leaders in the Assembly have narrowly voted against same-sex marriage today (29 April).

Out of the 97 members of the legislative assembly, 42 voted in favor while 53 voted against.

An amendment adding language about protecting religious freedoms in the motion also failed, with 51 voting against and 46 in favor.

The vote followed the Irish Constitution Convention that voted for equal marriage with a 79% majority.

New Mexico is one step close to marriage equality as five city councilors vote in favor, and three voted against

New Mexico capital Santa Fe voted in favor of same-sex marriage last night (24 April).

Over an hour of discussion, five city councilors voted for equal marriage, one voted against, and two abstained.

While the passage of the resolution does not change the law, supporters are saying this is the first step towards marriage equality in the US state.

Delaware House panel approved a marriage equality bill in the small East Coast state

Delaware’s House Administration Committee approved the gay marriage bill with a 4-1 vote sending it to a House floor vote.

The bill - HB75 – was debated today (17 April) for 90 minutes in which speakers were given two minutes to testify, reported On Top Magazine.

Richard Smith, president of the Delaware chapter of the NAACP, was among those testifying saying: ‘We believe marriage equality is a civil right’.

New Zealand is ready to make gay marriage legal with parliament set to vote on the issue tomorrow (17 April).

Ireland’s constitutional convention has voted overwhelmingly in favor of amending the country’s constitution to legalize gay marriage.

Bisbee, Arizona has become the first jurisdiction in the state to recognize same-sex relationships despite a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage

The former gold mining town of Bisbee, Arizona has become the first jurisdiction in the state to recognize same-sex relationships.

The city council voted on Tuesday to legalize same-sex civil unions despite the threat of legal action against it by the Arizona Attorney General.

Attorney General Tom Horne had written to the council prior to the vote to warn that it had ‘no authority to pass the ordinance’ and that if it was approved he would seek to have it blocked in court before it could come into effect.

Tasmania’s Lower House has approved a bill giving same-sex couples and unmarried straight couples the right to adopt on the same basis as married heterosexual couples

LGBT rights advocates in the Australian state of Tasmania have welcomed overwhelming support in its Lower House of Parliament for the passage of legislation removing a ban on adoption by same-sex couples, saying it is in the best interests of children.

This afternoon the Tasmanian Lower House voted 18 to 4 to allow same-sex couples to be assessed as potential adoptive parents on the same basis as other couples.

Utah's Orrin Hatch: 'I draw the line on traditional marriage'

US Republican Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah says he believes civil unions - not same-sex marriages - are the answer to the marriage equality debate.

'I do believe this could be solved greatly by a civil-union law that would give gay people the same rights as married people,' Hatch said in an interview with radio station KVNU in Utah. 'I think we can solve this problem without undermining the very basis of marital law in our country.'

A leading Estonian intellectual has called for the legal recognition of same-sex relationship and says it could even be useful to recognize non-sexual dependent relationships between heterosexual friends.

Chairman of the Estonian Writers’ Union and poet Karl Martin Sinijärv made the call in response to comments from IRL party MP Erki Nool that homosexuals should be avoided and given medical treatment.

Simon Cazal and Sergio López, a gay couple in Paraguay is mounting a legal challenge to force the country to recognize theirs and others’ gay marriage 

A Paraguayan gay couple demands the right to register their marriage in their country.

Thirty-year old Simon Cazal and 20-year-old Sergio López were married last year in Argentina, the first Latin American country to approve nationwide gay marriage.

However, Paraguay has no laws for same-sex marriage or civil unions.

As part of their first year anniversary, the couple asked yesterday (22 March) a judge in Asunción, Paraguay’s capital, to order civil registry officials to record their marriage.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper today signed into law a measure that legalizes same-sex civil unions in his state.

The new law provides gay and lesbian couples with such legal protections and responsibilities as the ability to take family leave to care for a partner, to make medical and end-of-life decisions for a partner, to live together in a nursing home, and to adopt children together.

Before Jorge Mario Bergoglio became Pope Francis, he once supported the idea of civil unions for gay couples in Argentina.

In 2010, when Argentina was about to legalize marriage equality, Bergoglio argued the Roman Catholic Church should seek a compromise.

He described civil unions as the ‘lesser of two evils’ at a meeting behind closed doors with Argentina’s bishops, according to Sergio Rubin, his authorized biographer.

‘He wagered on a position of greater dialogue with society,’ Rubin said.

A New Mexico mayor is urging county clerks to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, due to the law being ‘sufficiently vague’.

The US state does not explicitly permit or prohibit same-sex marriage, and does not offer civil unions or domestic partnerships.

But David Coss, the mayor of the capital Santa Fe, said the state law ‘supports’ it as the marriage statute does not specify gender.
