Gay Star News talks to Miyuki Baker about her world travels in search of queer artists and activists

What are the queer communities like in South America compared to Australia? Singapore compared to India? South Korea to Turkey? Recent college graduate Miyuki Baker is finding out by traveling the world in search of queer artists and activists, like herself.

After graduating from Pennsylvania-based liberal arts college Swarthmore, Baker won a $25,000 (US dollars, €19,000) Watson Fellowship that allows her to travel the world pursuing a particular project.

Straight Green party senator John Sudarksy has emerged as a champion of LGBT equality and talks about why he thinks it unlikely Colombia’s Senate will say ‘I do’ to gay marriage

As the Colombian Senate prepares its second attempt to vote on marriage equality bill shortly today, we speak to Green Party senator John Sudarsky, an ardent supporter of LGBT rights in Colombia.

Last week Colombia’s Senate decided to postpone the debate on same sex marriage until today (23 April).

However most commentators are pessimistic, after an agreement was allegedly reached between Colombia’s two largest parties, the Conservative and the ‘U’, to not allow the bill to become law.

After a three-hour debate, where a majority of Colombian senators appeared to oppose marriage equality, Colombia’s senate postponed the debate to next week

The Colombian Senate decides to suspend marriage equality vote until Tuesday (23 April) by a vote of 35-30.

Only 65 senators attended the vote out of the Senate's 102 members.

During an intense discussion that started today (17 April) at 5pm local time, the Senate unexpectedly postponed the vote on the equal marriage bill.

The decision was made following a proposal of the Senator Juan Restrepo of the ruling 'U' party, who pointed out that the debate ‘was very important’ for country’s future and that therefore it should be delayed.

Paris, a celebrity in Colombia, stated on Sunday (18 March) that she ‘based’ her theory on ‘scientific reports’ showing chickens injected with ‘feminine’ hormones for accelerated growth turns kids gay.

Gay activist couple have caused controversy after they displayed a 'gay' nativity scene, featuring two Josephs and no Mary

A gay couple in Colombia have sparked the outrage of Conservative Christians after displaying a ‘gay’ Christmas scene outside their home.

Andrés Vásquez, a political analyst, and Felipe Cárdenas, an entrepreneur, decorated their Bogóta home with a nativity scene featuring two Josephs but no Virgin Mary surrounding the baby Jesus.

Neighbors were apparently not ready to embrace the inclusive Christmas, as they took to social media to disparage the display and berate the couple.

Right-wing politician Edgar Espíndola reacts angrily to senate's first approval of same-sex marriage bill

A Colombian senator has likened gay marriage to bestiality and necrophilia.

Edgar Espíndola, who is a member of the conservative National Integration Party, reacted angriliy to a vote in the senate which approved a bill legalizing gay marriage.

'Today in the world there are many countries where bestiality is practically a sexual preference for some, or necrophilia, or pedophilia,' Espíndola said, reported Colombia's El Tiempo newspaper.

A bill to legalize same-sex marriage passed the first of four votes in order to become law in Colombia

A bill legalizing gay marriage past the first of four votes amid criticism from conservative groups.

The bill was was approved on Tuesday (4 November) by 10 votes against five senators of the first committee of the Senate responsible for constitutional matters, reported the portal Univision.

The bill will now face a vote in the Colombian Senate however no date was yet set for a debate and vote.

A young gay dancer from Colombia was killed when his friend injected his buttocks with a fatal dose of liquid silicone

A young man from Colombia agreed to silicone injections in order to enlarge his buttocks, as he felt they were ‘inadequate’.

The operation, which was carried out by a nonmedical personal described by the young man as his friend, led to his death, reported the daily El Colombiano.

Colombia’s Congress is debating legislation to legalize same-sex marriage for the seventh time, but same-sex couples will get all the rights of married couples in less than a year if they fail to act

The Colombian Congress is debating same-sex marriage for the seventh time, with less than a year before the end of a deadline set by the country’s Supreme Court for lawmakers to act on the issue.

The current bill has been sponsored by Alternative Democratic party representative Alba Luz Pinilla and seeks to change the definition of marriage in Colombia’s Civil Code to include same-sex couples.

The Spanish National Court claims the asylum petition is only meant to avoid deportation 

A Colombian transexual has been denied asylum in Spain.

According to El Diaro De Cádiz, the National Court ruled that the individual only wanted to avoid deportation from Spain.

The claimant, who has been in Spain since May 2000, submitted the petition 24 March 2011, five days after courts ruled the individual be kept in the Center for Foreigners in Algericas for subsequent deportation.

The news website did not clarify the gender identity of the individual, referring to the person as 'a transexual'

Juan Francisco Fernández Cuello is reportedly the fifth homophobic murder for 2012 in the city of Barranquilla

A gay 34-year-old hairdresser has been gunned down by a gang in the port city of Barranquilla, Colombia.

Colombian LGBT groups say the killing of  Juan Francisco Fernández Cuello on Sunday (3 June) is the fifth gay-related murder this year in Barranquilla.

The suspects on motorcycles shot at Fernández Cuello as he left an unidentified venue in the Villa San Pedro area with some friends.

The victim sustained injuries from three bullets and was pronounced dead upon arrival to the hospital.

But Latin America is becoming gayer.

Gay, bi and trans communities in Latin America have always existed, albeit quietly. With gay rights issues gaining prominence around the world, LGBT communities in Latin America are making themselves known to their neighbors, politicians and the world.

'It's not that there are more gays and lesbians living in Latin America,' wrote Javier Corrales, political science professor at Amherst College and editor of the book The Politics of Sexuality in Latin America.

Ruling comes after two gay men were escorted out of a Cali mall for kissing in public

Colombia’s constitutional court has ruled the government cannot restrict gay couples’ right to express affection in public.

The ruling comes after two men were forced to leave a Cali mall when a security guard found them kissing in public.

The court decided the incident was in violation of the couple’s human rights.

The judge stated in his ruling the security guard's actions showed ‘discrimination that only affected gay couples.’

Mayor Gustavo Petro's LGBTI Affairs Branch will address reports of homophobia in capital city

Gustavo Petro, the mayor of Colombia's capital, Bogota, has launched the LGBTI Affairs Branch to address local problems of discrimination based on sexual-orientation.

The group will also build an education and events venue to further raise awareness of other lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex issues throughout the city.
