Diller: 'My  first audience were gay people because they have a great sense of humor'

Just a month after her 95th birthday,  legendary comic Phyllis Diller died on Monday (20 August) at home in Los Angeles surrounded by her family.

Diller began working as a stand-up comic in the 1950s and is credited with paving the way for the likes of Joan Rivers, Roseanne Barr and Margaret Cho, among others.

Diller had a gay following from the beginning.

'My first audience were gay people because they have a great sense of humor,' she once said. 'They love comedy and they love to laugh. How do you think they got the word gay put on them?'

Legendary star plays Reba McEntire's outspoken mom on new ABC sitcom

It was more than 40 years ago that Lily Tomlin came to fame as a cast member of TV's Laugh-In where the world was introduced to such characters as condescending telephone operator Ernestine and a precocious five-and-a-half year old named Edith Ann.

In the new ABC sitcom Malibu Country, the legendary performer unveils a new character to audiences: an outspoken Southern woman named Lillie Mae whose daughter is played by Reba McEntire.

Comedienne's weekly hour on Bravo network is heavy on gay content

Kathy Griffin's weekly talk show was deemed by guest Jane Fonda as 'the weirdest show I've ever done in my life' and had another guest, Anderson Cooper, saying on the air: 'Bitch, what the f-- are you doing?'

Bravo announced on Thursday (26 July) that the fun on Kathy will continue for a second season.

Latest mainstream US company to choose a lesbian star to promote its product

Proctor & Gamble has hired lesbian comedienne Wanda Sykes to promote its Gain detergents.

The selection comes the same year that another major US company, JC Penney, hired lesbian Ellen DeGeneres as its spokeswoman and faced protests from the anti-gay group One Million Moms because of it.

'I spent most of the concert in a stall, rocking back and forth'

Don't expect to ever see Eddie Murphy as a guest on Bravo's Watch What Happen Live hosted by Andy Cohen.

In his new memoir, Most Talkative, the openly gay Cohen shares a traumatic experience he had in high school when he and his friends went to see Murphy in concert during his days on Saturday Night Live.

'Unfortunately, his live routine differed from his television shtick; namely in that it mostly consisted of ridiculing gay people,' Cohen writes. 'Every other word out of his mouth was 'faggot' and with each and every gay joke, the crowd went wild.'

Ellen DeGeneres, whose talk show has won 25 Emmys, will need to make room on her awards shelf for yet another honor: the 15th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Past winners include Richard Pryor, Steve Martin, Whoopi Goldberg, Tina Fey, George Carlin and Will Ferrell.

'It's such an honor to receive the Mark Twain Prize,' she said in a statement. 'To get the same award that has been given to people like Bill Cosby, Tina Fey and Will Ferrell, it really makes me wonder … why didn't I get this sooner?'

Tells Gay Star News: 'Honey, you are my demographic'

Kathy Griffin's new weekly talk show debuts Thursday (19 April) on the Bravo network and the outspoken comedienne tells Gay Star News she knows darn well who her audience is.

'Honey, you are my demographic,' she said during a conference call this morning.

'The struggle on this show is to get one f***ing heterosexual [viewer]. This show is basically straight bashing at this point. We are very, very LGBTQI-friendly. We talk about those issues. ... My tentacles have been reaching into the community for a long time.'

Kate McKinnon in the running to become a regular on NBC late night staple

With Kristin Wiig uncertain about whether she will be returning to Saturday Night Live next season, the show is finding some reinforcements including lesbian comedienne Kate McKinnon who makes her debut this week.

It's been more than 25 years since a lesbian has been cast on SNL. The late Danitra Vance was a regular during the 1985-86 season.

Support from Jay Leno and Chelsea Handler boost former intern's TV career

Television audiences first met Ross Mathews more than a decade ago when he began covering celebrity events as an intern for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

On Wednesday (18 January), Mathews will appear as Leno's guest for the first time to talk about guest hosting the E! show Chelsea Lately all next week.

'It's going to be cool to actually sit down on the show,' Mathews tells Gay Star News. 'I've never actually sat down if you think about it.'

Joan Rivers may be 78 but she remains as busy and outspoken as ever.

The legendary comic begins season two of the reality series Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best on Jan. 24 and her weekly E! series Fashion Police expands to a one-hour format on Jan. 24.

She tells Gay Star News that through all of her career ups and downs, she has always been able to count on her enormous gay fan base.

'They were the first ones to laugh at me,' Rivers says.
