Karina Villarroel and Soledad Ortiz will become the first lesbian married couple to have their child baptized in the Catholic faith today, with Argentininian President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner agreeing to act as godmother

An Argentinian lesbian married couple has received approval from a Catholic archbishop for their baby daughter to be baptized today (5 April).

It is believed to be the first baptism of a child with same-sex parents in the South American country, which made gay marriage legal in 2010.

Argentina’s pro-gay President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has agreed to act as godmother to Karina Villarroel and Soledad Ortiz’s 2 month old baby daughter Umma.

Two years ago today Argentina legalized gay marriage.

Despite opposition from the Roman Catholic Church, the Argentine Senate approved changes to Article 172 of the Civil Code to legalize gay marriage in the country on 15 July 2010.

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner ratified the law on 21 July.
