Campaigners hail victory as 'vile' Islamic preacher Sheikh Assim Al-Hakeem stopped from talking at a second English university

A Muslim gay hate preacher has been barred from speaking at a university in northern England, days after he was banned from another college.

Sheikh Assim Al-Hakeem was due to speak about women in Islam at Sheffield Hallam University tomorrow (27 March), but the event, organized by the student union Islamic Society, was cancelled today (26 March) amid growing pressure from campaigners, some of whom planned to picket the lecture.

An announcement from Twitter on Thursday that they will now be able to block users and tweets by country has led to fears it will allow restrictive regimes to quash movements towards freedom and obstruct the LGBT movement in the Middle East and North Africa. Previously Twitter could only block tweets and accounts globally.

New level of isolation and danger for LGBT Iranians as authorities prepare to switch off world web access

Gay Iranians are facing a new level of isolation as Iran prepares to cut itself off from the World Wide Web, say activists.

Iran has placed new restrictions on cyber cafes and is preparing to launch a 'National Internet' as part of an online war between Iran and the US and with Iranian democracy activists.

And the impact will be particularly felt by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the country, say campaigners, who have labeled the move ‘disastrous’.

New film released by Gay Middle East as US forces leave Iraq – 750 LGBT people murdered since 2003 invasion

Gay Middle East has released a new film showing the desperate plight of LGBT Iraqis – a situation which has worsened since the 2003 invasion of the country.

The video is about the lives of gay Iraqi men seeking refuge in Damascus, Syria due to their sexuality and has been released to coincide with the US military departure from Iraq.
