Harris, who had been rumored as possible Letterman successor, tweets: 'He's a fantastic choice. I'm a huge fan'

The selection of Stephen Colbert today to replace David Letterman as host of The Late Show on CBS ended speculation that Neil Patrick Harris could become the first openly gay host in late night history.

Harris took to Twitter to congratulate the host of The Colbert Report who will take over for Letterman next year.

He tweeted: 'I'm thrilled for replacing Dave. He's a fantastic choice. I'm a huge fan. Colbert is rad.'

Once David Letterman announced that he plans to step down as host of The Late Show on CBS, names of possible successors immediately began to be floated.

One of those names is Neil Patrick Harris who would make history as the first openly gay late night host.

'But I'm a big fan of CBS and [CBS's chairman and chief executive officer Les Moonves], so who knows?' Harris tells the New York Observer.

Gay rapper Le1f has put a verbal smack-down on Lord Jamar of the Brand Nubians – telling him that he knows more about oppression than he does as a gay black man

Self-styled ‘hip hop conservative’ and rapper Lord Jamar has attacked openly gay rapper Le1f for performing on the Late Show with David Letterman in a skirt.

Jamar posted a link to a YouTube video of the performance, writing that he was ‘[a]bout to have a field day,’ over how Le1f had been dressed on the show – but it did not go unnoticed by Le1f.

AJ Clemente's 'gut wrenching' gaffe has him looking for work

AJ Clemente has gone from anchoring at a tiny station in North Dakota to appearing on NBC's The Today Show in a matter of days.

But he didn't get a promotion - he got fired.

Clemente, unaware he was on the air, appeared to say 'gay fucking shit' at the start of his very first newscast as weekend anchor at the Bismarck station KFYR-TV.

He told Today's Matt Lauer and Savannah Gutherie he was struggling to practice the name of London Marathon winner Tsegaye Kebede, mangled it, then said the expletive.

Late night talk show host David Letterman let off some steam Wednesday night (3 April) directed at gay marriage opponents during a chat with guest Rachel Maddow.

Letterman described himself as 'just sick and tired' of the arguments against marriage equality and the characteristics of the debate itself.

'I think it has really crossed the line of being nonsense,' he said. 'This ongoing, politically nuanced, religiously nuanced discussion of gay marriage, gay rights. It is absolute stupidity.'
