'I love you David and will miss you a lot'

A fellow television icon was having his last night on the air and Ellen DeGeneres did not want to let David Letterman go without paying the proper respect.

On Wednesday (20 May), the day of Letterman's last night as host of CBS's The Late Show, DeGeneres closed her own show with a tribute to Letterman's 33 years on network television.

'What a career he's had,' DeGeneres said. 'He is, for me personally, an inspiration.'

Gay icon did her first of many guest spots with Letterman 29 years ago

Cher made a surprise visit to The Late Show With David Letterman on Wednesday night.

The gay icon's appearance was not publicized and she simply walked out during Letterman's monologue for a few minutes of banter with the host who is retiring from the show later this month.

Cher's first appearance with Letterman was 29 years ago when his show was on NBC and she memorably called him as 'asshole.'

But even more memorable was her 1987 appearance with ex-husband Sonny Bono when the former singing partners sang in public together for the last time.

She kills it anyway

Chaka Khan has performed the Weather Girls' classic It's Raining Men on the Late Show with David Letterman last night.

Well, she tried to.

Clearly using an auto-prompter, the diva clearly didn't learn the lyrics.

While she still slayed it anyway, looking stunning for 62, it was slightly awkward.

Co-writer of the track, Paul Shaffer, was playing along on the piano. He didn't look too pleased.

Billy on the Street sensation challenges Letterman to game of  "Celebrity Child or Kentucky Derby Winner?"

David Letterman doesn't seem like the kind of guy who especially likes being screamed at by a gay man.

But he made an exception on Thursday (11 September) for a very funny gay man named Billy Eichner.

Eichner is the hilarious host of the online sensation Billy on the Street which has him running around New York City, usually with a celebrity in tow, handing dollar bills to people who answer his impromptu questions correctly.

Eichner's profile was raised considerably last month when he did a bit for the Emmys with host Seth Meyers.

Says person serving him 'looked at me like I was the loneliest, most pathetic person on the planet'

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper may be rich and famous but he's still a hard-working journalist who was on the job on his 47th birthday this week.

After doing a broadcast from Boston, he did the five-hour drive back to New York City and decided to duck into a McDonald's for a late-night birthday meal.

He ordered a Big Mac meal and 'I super-sized it because it was my birthday,' the CNN anchor told David Letterman Wednesday (4 June).

Then things got a little sad.

But so far there 'hasn't even been a conversation at all' with CBS

Once David Letterman announced that he plans to step down as host of The Late Show on CBS, names of possible successors immediately began to be floated.

One of those names is Neil Patrick Harris who would make history as the first openly gay late night host.

'But I'm a big fan of CBS and [CBS's chairman and chief executive officer Les Moonves], so who knows?' Harris tells the New York Observer.

Gay rapper Le1f has put a verbal smack-down on Lord Jamar of the Brand Nubians – telling him that he knows more about oppression than he does as a gay black man

Self-styled ‘hip hop conservative’ and rapper Lord Jamar has attacked openly gay rapper Le1f for performing on the Late Show with David Letterman in a skirt.

AJ Clemente's 'gut wrenching' gaffe has him looking for work

AJ Clemente has gone from anchoring at a tiny station in North Dakota to appearing on NBC's The Today Show in a matter of days.

But he didn't get a promotion - he got fired.

Clemente, unaware he was on the air, appeared to say 'gay fucking shit' at the start of his very first newscast as weekend anchor at the Bismarck station KFYR-TV.

He told Today's Matt Lauer and Savannah Gutherie he was struggling to practice the name of London Marathon winner Tsegaye Kebede, mangled it, then said the expletive.

'Humans have the right to do what humans do, that’s it. End of the story'

Late night talk show host David Letterman let off some steam Wednesday night (3 April) directed at gay marriage opponents during a chat with guest Rachel Maddow.

Letterman described himself as 'just sick and tired' of the arguments against marriage equality and the characteristics of the debate itself.

'I think it has really crossed the line of being nonsense,' he said. 'This ongoing, politically nuanced, religiously nuanced discussion of gay marriage, gay rights. It is absolute stupidity.'

Comic says she tried to go down on newsman for 'ladies and gays'

Kathy Griffin has no regrets for kissing Anderson Cooper's crotch and trying to 'go down' on the newsman during their annual stint co-hosting CNN's New Year's Eve broadcast from Times Square.

'If you think this is the part where I'm going to apologize for trying to go down on Anderson Cooper you are sorely mistaken,' the comic told David Letterman during an appearance on his late-night talk show Wednesday (2 January).

'I tried ladies and gays, I tried - for you!' she added.
