President Goodluck Jonathan has not yet been sent the bill for signature, activists believe, and could delay it further

Nigeria’s ‘Jail All the Gays Bill’ may still not have been passed to President Goodluck Jonathan for his signature, giving extra time to lobby against it.

The Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Bill was passed by parliament on 18 December.

It adds to the country’s criminalization of homosexuality, which already sees harsh jail penalties and the death penalty in northern states.

President Goodluck Jonathan will be violating Nigerian law and treaties if he signs bill to jail all gays, lesbians and those who protect them

UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay has condemned Nigeria’s new law, designed to round up and imprison all gay people in the country.

She said the bill violates Nigeria’s own equality legislation and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The ‘Jail All the Gays Bill’ has been passed by the Senate and House of Representatives and is just awaiting signature from President Goodluck Jonathan.

LGBT activists have said the politicians passed the measure in part because they, and Jonathan, want to detract from serious problems in the country.

Nigeria will pass a bill to jail every gay person and the president will sign it, the leader of the country’s House of Representatives has told an activist.

Honorable Mulikat Akande-Adeola, House Leader, made the comments in response to questions from Davis Mac-Iyalla, founder of Changing Attitude Nigeria, at an event in London.

A lawyer is suing the Nigerian government over an anti-gay bill which, if passed, would put LGBT people at risk of violence and arrest.

Robert Igbinedion has filed a law-suit against the African country's president and attorney general at the Federal High Court in Lagos, claiming the Same Gender Marriage Prohibition Bill violates Nigeria's constitution.
