Long-awaited historic gay wedding between two men to take place on US daytime soap - see preview

US daytime soap history is about to be made this week on NBC's Days of Our Lives with the wedding of Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis.

Beginning Tuesday (1 April), the couple's wedding will begin to play out in the fictional town of Salem - a Midwestern US city in a state that has never been specified.

It will be the first wedding between two male characters. The now-canceled All My Children on ABC had the very first same-sex nuptials between two lesbian characters in 2009.

Alison Sweeney: 'They're telling a great soap storyline about a character who happens to be gay'

At the age of 36, longtime Days of Our Lives star Alison Sweeney feels far too young to be a grandmother-  even of it's only on screen.

'I've had to get used to it!' the actress tells Gay Star News. 'I had to take a deep breath but I'm cool with it. I think it's a great story.'

That story is a doozy and it involves the gay son of Sweeney's television alter ego Sami Brady. The son, Will Horton, has just come to terms with his sexuality but had a one night stand with his former girlfriend, Gabi, when both were suffering through low moments.

Actor who plays gay character of Will Horton accepted prize in San Francisco

Fans of the NBC daytime soap Days of Our Lives know that the character of Will Horton is one of about a dozen characters with motive to kill Salem's evil Stefano DiMera who was shot dead this week.

But it is not for this kind of storyline that the soap won the GLAAD Media Award for daily drama series. The award came for the long-running soap's gay storyline which focuses on young Horton, played by Emmy nominee Chandler Massey, and also his friend Sonny Kiriakis who is portrayed by Freddie Smith.

Chandler Massey played months of angst until moment of self-acceptance this week on NBC's Days of Our Lives

It's been nearly a year since reports first surfaced that the character of Will Horton, a member of one of the core famlies on the NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives, would be coming out as gay.

The storyline was delayed then slow to develop as the show got a new writing team. (This week, those writers were replaced themselves by two of the show's former writers).

All the while Emmy nominee Chandler Massey continued to bide his time in other storylines until four months ago when Will's sexuality began to be addressed.
