A state government lawmaker in the Malaysian state of Penang has proposed setting up a committee to protect the welfare of transgender people but the opposition has warned it will lead to more rights for LGBTs.

The Democratic Action Party’s Teh Yee Cheu put forward the proposal last week, sparking claims from the state opposition leader that the measure could lead to same-sex marriages in the state.

Teh told the state assembly that the issue had been overlooked and said there had been no action on the issue since he had first brought it up in 2009.

A Malaysian MP has spoken out against the Education Ministry for spreading ‘hate' and fanning ‘the flames of intolerance and homophobia’.

Gay Star News reported yesterday on government-endorsed guidelines that warn Malaysian parents to look out for stereotyped ‘symptoms’ that their children are gay. These include, for gay men, preferences for ‘tight and light coloured clothes’ and ‘big handbags’.

Malaysia deputy minister says government is ‘tackling’ LGBT issue

A Malaysia deputy minister questioned in the senate yesterday, said that the constitution did not protect the rights of LGBT citizens.

Dr Mashitah Ibrahim, deputy minister in the prime minister’s department responded to a question in the senate about what the government was doing to ‘tackle’ LGBT issues.

‘A series of rehabilitation and treatment courses will be given to Muslims who have deviated from societal norms,’ said Mashitah. She said that being LGBT was against Islam and the constitution of the country, as Islam is the official religion.
