The parents of Tyler Clementi, the gay Rutgers University student who jumped off of the George Washington Bridge to his death in 2010, have decided not to sue anyone over their son's suicide.

An attorney for James and Jane Clementi says the parents had filed papers shortly after their son’s death preserving their right to sue Rutgers. They also will not be bringing a civil suit against Dharun Ravi, their son's roommate who spied on his dorm room encounter with another man then discussed what he saw on the webcam with friends on Twitter.

Dharun Ravi was released from Middlesex County jail in North Brunswick, New Jersey, on Tuesday (19 June) and will not have to worry about being deported to his native India.

The 20 year old, convicted of spying on his gay roommate and another man while a student at Rutgers University, served 20 days of a 30 day sentence in the high-profile case. The roommate, Tyler Clementi, committed suicide after Ravi discussed what he saw on the webcam with friends on Twitter.

When Judge Glenn Berman sentenced former Rutgers student Dharun Ravi to 30 days in jail spying on his roommate's encounter with another man with a webcam, he said to Ravi: 'I haven't heard you apologize once.'

That apology finally came on Tuesday (29 May) when Ravi issued a public apology and announced that he would begin serving his sentence on Thursday.

Attorneys for Dharun Ravi are asking a judge to overturn his conviction

Dharun Ravi, the former Rutgers student convicted in March of spying on former roommate Tyler Clementi, is now asking a judge to overturn his conviction or at least grant him a new trial.

Ravi's actions resulted in his former roommate committing suicide. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 21 for bias intimidation, invasion of privacy, and tampering with evidence. 

Ravi faces up to 10 years in prison.

Dharun Ravi, the former Rutgers student convicted last week of spying on Tyler Clementi, is expressing remorse over his actions which resulted in his former roommate committing suicide.

Ravi was found guilty of bias intimidation, invasion of privacy, and tampering with evidence and faces up to 10 years in prison. Bias intimindation is a hate crime based on the fact that Clementi was gay.

A US student accused of secretly filming his room-mate's gay kiss, days before he committed suicide, is 'not a homophobic bully', his defence lawyer says.

Steven Altman told jurors in closing statements that 20-year-old Dharun Ravi never recorded the encounter and that he did not act out of a hatred of gays, the BBC reported.

A man allegedly secretly filmed kissing a gay US student, days before he committed suicide, has told jurors that he noticed a webcam in the university dormitory room.

‘I had just glanced over my shoulder and I noticed there was a webcam that was faced toward the direction of the bed,’ the man, identified only by the initials M.B., said in court on Friday (2 March), ‘Just being in a compromising position and seeing a camera lens - it just stuck out to me.’
