Say happy birthday to the world's most famous gay host with 57 of her best moments

Ellen DeGeneres is going to be 57 on Monday (26 January), so what better time to count down the reasons why we love her?

Amiable and approachable, this Louisiana-born comic and host has managed to change the world for the better. By remaining that fun aunt to the American and international public, she is a force for good when it comes to LGBTI rights.

When DeGeneres came out in 1997, her career could have very easily ended there. And it did, as for a short period of time, she became a national joke.

Sam Smith yesterday said he does want to be a spokesperson for the gay community, a role he previously said would be 'awful.'

'I wouldn’t know if (Portia) was pregnant or not or if we’re getting divorced or getting remarried – I keep up with it that way’

Ellen DeGeneres knows she has a lot to be thankful for.

So on her daytime show this week, she mixed humor in with sincerity as she shared with her audience some of the things for which she gives thanks.

She started off by giving ‘thanks for elastic waistbands’ after a Thanksgiving Day pig out.

‘I am grateful for you – all of you,’ Ellen said. ‘Without you I would be up here talking to no one and that would be sad. I am thankful to have this show and this platform to reach millions of people every day – it’s not something I take for granted.’
