President continues to resist pressure to sign executive order on non-discrimination act

President Barack Obama wants to see the long-stalled Employment Non-Discrimination Act enacted but he remains unwilling to go around congress and sign it into law by Executive Order.

Obama, appearing with Vice President Joe Biden at the LGBT Pride Month Reception at The White House Thursday (13 June), said of ENDA: 'We need to get that passed. I want to sign that bill, we need to get it done now.'

He added: 'I think we can make that happen because after the last four-and-a-half years, you can't tell me things can't happen.'

GetEQUAL takes the fight to the halls of Congress, demanding action on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act

Eight gay workers were arrested today (13 June) as they protested at the door of House Speaker John Boehner. The activists demanded the speaker bring the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) to a vote.

ENDA establishes national protections preventing employers from discriminating against an employee due to sexual orientation or gender identity.

Barack Obama, the first sitting US president to express support for gay marriage, trumpeted the recent progress Americans have made towards equality in an LGBT Pride Month Proclamation released Friday (31 May).

'In the past year, for the first time, voters in multiple States affirmed marriage equality for same-sex couples,' Obama stated.

 'We are all the same and we must be equal under the law'

The governor of Puerto Rico signed bills into law on Wednesday (29 May) that protect LGBT people against discrimination and adds to the country's domestic violence law protections for sexual orientation, marital status and gender identity.

Governor Alejandro García Padilla signed the legislation at his official residence in San Juan and issued a statement via Twitter: 'The dignity of being a human being is inviolable because we are all the same and we must be equal under the law.'

Senate already has approved and governor has promised to sign into law

The Puerto Rican House of Representatives on Friday (24 May) approved a sweeping nondiscrimination bill that protects lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in employment, housing, governmental services, public accommodations and private entities.

The Senate has already approved the bill and Governor Alejandro García Padilla has vowed to sign the legislation into law.

The vote occurred as similar legislation - the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) - remains stalled in the US Congress.

Mayor Michael Nutter's signature puts the US city Philadelphia in vanguard for gay equality

Philadelphia is now the only US city with wide ranging legislation to protect LGBT citizens and families.

Last week, on 9 May (Thursday), Mayor Michael Nutter signed Bill No. 130224. According to the city's website, the new law provides a tax credit to 'employers who offer health benefits to same-sex couples, life partners and transgender employees.'  No other city in the US offers such benefits to employers.

 The Transgender Equality Network Ireland are urging supporters to take action after being refused right to request new birth certificates

Transgender people will have to wait another year before their real identity is recognized, after Ireland's Gender Recognition Bill was delayed.

The Republic of Ireland's bill has been pushed back to 2014 and the Transgender Eqaulity Network Ireland (TENI) is calling for supporters to take action.

The bill is awaiting approval from the Irish parliament’s Heads of Bill. Pushing it back down the legislative agenda has been branded a breach of human rights.

Proposed act would ban job discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity

The proposed Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which has long languished in the US C0ngress, was introduced again on Thursday (25 April) by a bipartisan group of lawmakers.

Among the co-sponsors optimistic of the bill's chances is Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley (pictured) who believes the timing may finally be right for passage.

People can continue to be excluded from jury selection on the grounds of their sexuality in the US state of West Virginia after lawmakers voted down a bill that would have seen them protected in courtrooms.

West Virginia has one of the poorest gay rights records of any US state and if passed, the bill would have been the first time that any kind of legal protection was extended to LGBT people.

Bob Casey, US senator from Pennsylvania, came out in favor of marriage equality on Monday (1 April) and also called for the end of the Defense of Marriage Act.

Casey had been under increasing pressure after four of his Democratic colleagues in the senate switched their positions last week when the US Supreme Court heard cases challenging DOMA and California's Proposition 8.

A new Sex Discrimination Act will be introduced this week in parliament in Australia, but it still includes religious exemptions

A new Sex Discrimination Act will be introduced to parliament in Australia this week and the Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus is confident it will go through.

If passed into law the Act will give particularly intersex people greater protection from discrimination, as they will be named as a separate group in the legislation for the first time.

The Act also will mean that same-sex couples are treated the same as straight couples in domestic relationships and will be entitled to the same benefits.

Act prohibits federal contractors from LGBT discrimination in workplace

President Barack Obama is facing increased pressure to take matters into his hands when it comes to the long-stalled Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).

Obama received a letter on Wednesday (20 March) from 110 members of the US Congress asking him to sign ENDA into law by executive order rather than hoping a Republican-led House of Representatives will ever pass it.

Obama has said previously that he supports ENDA but would like to see it passed by Congress in much the same way the end of the anti-gay military policy Don't Ask Don't Tell was handled.

'I respect people who disagree with me on certain things, but that means they have to respect me too'

US Senator Marco Rubio, a potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate, said Thursday (14 March) that being against gay marriage doesn't make him a bigot.

Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland, Rubio said: 'Just because I believe states should have the right to define marriage in a traditional way does not make me a bigot.'

He also said he feels judged for some other positions including being anti-abortion and for not buying into the science behind climate change.

A new bill by members of the Republican party attempts to ban same-sex marriage in military bases

Republican congressman, Tim Huelskamp is introducing the 'Military Religious Freedom Protection Act', a bill which aims to ban on gay marriages on military bases.

On the surface the bill appears to 'protect' military chaplains, 'ensuring' that they cannot be penalized if their religious beliefs are not pro-gay, however commentators pointed out such provision already exist.

Group of US senators send letter to president to end stalemate on ENDA

It's clear President Barack Obama is in favor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) but he wants to see it passed by US Congress in the same way the repeal of the military's Don't Ask Don't Tell was during his first term in office.

But LGBT groups and now a group of 37 US senators are putting pressure on Obama to take action now to protect the employment rights of LGBT people by issuing an executive order to add sexual orientation and gender identity to other long-standing federal anti-discrimination protections.

President Obama called for an end to work based discrimination against gays and lesbians

President Obama spoke out against work discrimination against gays during his State of the Union address, although he did not outline any concrete actions to enforce these rights.

During Obama's speech last night (12 February) the president made remarks in-line with his second inaugural address that gays and lesbians should not suffer work based discrimination.

Referring to the nation’s promise of economic stability, Obama stated that 'who you love' should not stop a person from being rewarded for their hard work.

Tom Harkin says  Employment Non-Discrimination Act  'will move this year'

For decades, the proposed Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) has languished in the US C0ngress.

But Iowa Senator Tom Harkin on Tuesday (12 February) promised at least a vote for that ENDA, which would establish protections nationally to prevent employers from discriminating against an employee because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Harkin made the pledge at an event held at the Center for American Progress in Washington DC saying that ENDA 'will move this year.'

GetEQUAL will stage a demonstration outside the White House today to demand LGBT protections in the workplace
 

An LGBT rights group is protesting President Obama's failure to enact LGBT workplace protections.

Civil rights organization GetEQUAL is staging a demonstration on the south side of the White House tonight at 6 PM Eastern Time, just two days before Obama's annual State of the Union Address during which he may address laws he wants passed in his second term in a speech given directly to both houses of the US legislature.

Virginia’s Senate approved a bill that would ban anti-LGBT discrimination against state employees

Virginia’s Senate has passed a bill prohibiting state government from discriminating against employees because of their sexual orientation and gender identity.

The bill, known as SB 701, passed in the state’s Senate with a 24-16 vote yesterday (25 January).

The move was applauded by Equality Virginia’s executive director James Parrish who said: ‘We are pleased that four Republican senators joined their Democratic colleagues in passing SB 701 to protect LGBT state employees’.

Brighton, on the south coast of England, is to reflect its high transgender population with a new honorific, ‘Mx’, as an alternative to male or female

Brighton and Hove City Council, which last year came under fire for its alleged plan to abolish gender-specific titles such as ‘Mr’ and ‘Mrs’, has today published its final report on the subject.

The document, produced under the auspices of the Trans Scrutiny Panel, contains 37 key recommendations covering areas as diverse as policing, community support and healthcare.

A court in Gorzow Wiekopolski, Poland, has ordered a supermarket to pay a former employee damages for anti-gay discrimination

Netto, a Danish-owned supermarket chain, was instructed to pay former till-attendant Ireneusz Muzalski 18,000 zloty (€ 4,400  US$ 5,770), as well as court costs.

Muzalski, a 44 year-old man, was employed at the Netto branch in Slubice, lying on Poland’s border with Germany, reported Radio Poland.

According to him, his manager subjected him to continuous anti-gay verbal abuse.

Analysis of official Scottish health survey findings shows lesbians and gays drink at hazardous or harmful levels, as well as possibly facing a problem with smoking  

Scotland’s chief statistician today announced the publication of a Scottish Health Survey topic report on 'equality groups'.

The report found that respondents who identify as lesbian and gay drank and smoke more than the average general population.

Equality campaigners called upon the Scottish government to expand future research and better address health needs of the LGBT community in the country.
