The head of the global Anglican Communion has written to African bishops to tell them to treat LGBTI people with dignity ahead of a trip to Africa

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York yesterday wrote to the heads of all the national churches in the global Anglican Communion - reminding them of a 2005 commitment they made to the pastoral support and care of gay people ahead of a trip by Archbishop Justin Welby to Africa.

Welby is visiting Africa for a five day trip in which he will be meeting Anglican leaders in South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Episcopal Church in Utah has welcomed the legalization of same-sex marriage in the state by a Federal Court judge, with the state’s bishop releasing a statement celebrating that gay and lesbian Utahans will be treated with the same dignity as other Utahans.

‘As the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Utah, I rejoice that US District Judge Robert J Shelby has struck down Utah’s Amendment 3,’ Bishop Scott Hayashi said of the ruling.

Anglicans who are opposed to gay people being ordained as clergy will meet in Nairobi in October for a second Global Anglican Future Conference five years after the first in Jerusalem

The conservative anti-gay faction within the Global Anglican Communion will meet for the second time in five years for a second Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) but say they are not yet ready to split to form their own church.

‘It is now ten years since the Episcopal Church of the United States consecrated Gene Robinson as Bishop of New Hampshire, despite the fact that he had left his wife and family and then later entered into a sexual relationship with a man,’ GAFCON chair and Primate of Kenya Archbishop Eliud Wabukala said.

A new policy dictates that gay priests in civil partnerships must prove they’re celibate to be considered for bishop-hood

Gay priests looking to move up in the Anglican Church must now undergo questioning into their sex lives.

In December, the House of Bishops ruled that priests who are in civil partnerships could become bishops, a decision that opened the doors for a number of openly gay priests who were already partnered to rise in the ranks of of the Church.

Rhode Island Episcopal bishop, the Rev, Nicholas Knisely, has written to clergy in his diocese to urge them to support same-sex marriage in the US’ smallest state.

‘As the Episcopal Bishop of Rhode Island, I support the bill before the General Assembly that would allow same-sex couples to marry in our state, not in spite of my Christian faith, but because of it,’ read a statement by Bishop Knisely that was sent to all active Episcopal clergy in Rhode Island on Friday.

The Washington National Cathedral, one of the world’s largest, historic and iconic places of worship will solemnise same-sex weddings, according to a statement published today (9 January).

As the one of the most prominent US churches and the US seat of the Episcopal Church, the decision has a tremendous symbolic value.

The 106-year-old cathedral inaugurates new presidents, conducts official services where Americans gather to mourn tragedies, will be among first Episcopal congregations to allow gay couples to wed.

One of America's largest Christian churches approves same-sex marriage rite

The Episcopalians are set to become America's biggest Christian church to bless gay marriage.

The Witnessing and Blessing of a Lifelong Covenant rite, which was agreed by the Chamber of Bishops yesterday (9 July) and is expected to be passed by the House of Deputies this week, will come into effect in December.

With nearly 2 million followers, according to the National Council of Churches,  the Episcopal Church will be the largest denomination to have a same-sex marriage liturgy.

It is the latest move by the institution in favor of LGBT equality.

The American Episcopal Church’s House of Bishops has approved a proposal to hire transgender men and women for a final vote

The USA’s Episcopal Church has approved a proposal on hiring transgender men and women to become bishops or ministers and is awaiting a final vote.

The institution's House of Bishops approved proposals allowing ‘gender identity and expression’, meaning it no longer discriminates against trans people as candidates for ministerial positions, reports the Global Times.
