Steve Levitan often told show has 'opened the door for conversation and acceptance'

Gay couple Cam and Mitch have been an intregal part of ABC's comedy hit Modern Family since it debuted in 2009 - a year after California voters passed Proposition 8.

The show is such a big hit that it's even the favorite of Ann Romney, wife of former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney who is strongly opposed to gay marriage.

The show's co-creator, Steve Levitan, told TheWrap on Monday (25 March) that he hopes the show has helped to change public opinion when it comes to marriage equality.

As the Illinois state legislature ponders whether to pass a marriage equality bill next week, Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson is in the state trying to drum up public support for Illinois to become the 10th state in the US to allow gay marriage.

On the ABC sitcom, Ferguson portrays Mitchell Pritchett who is raising a young daughter with his spouse Cameron Tucker who is played by Eric Stonestreet.

James Parsons gets nod for Big Bang Theory, Sarah Paulson for Game Change, Tony Kushner nominated for writing screenplay for Lincoln

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association unveiled the nominations for its Golden Globe Awards on Thursday (13 December) and they included some nods for LGBT artists and characters.

Among them are Jim Parsons, the openly gay actor who stars on the CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory. Parsons was nominated for best actor in a comedy or musical television series. 

Parsons won the Globe in 2011 and has also won two Emmys for his portrayal of the straight character of Sheldon Cooper.

Audience sees Mitch and Cam 'living the same lives as everybody else'

On ABC's Modern Family, Ty Burr's character of Phil Dunphy has a brother-in-law who is gay and is raising a young daughter with a male partner.

Those characters, Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) are among the show's most popular and Burr says that he believes they have helped the gay rights movement in some ways.

This is the third year Modern Family have taken the outstanding comedy series prize, this time beating competition from 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Girls and Veep.

The show also took the comedy series awards for outstanding director (Steven Levitan), supporting actress (Julie Bowen) and supporting actor (Eric Stonestreet, who plays gay father Cameron Tucker).

Steve Levitan: 'The minute it becomes our agenda, it loses some of what makes it perhaps special'

It was in the first episode of Modern Family in 2009 that gay couple Cam and Mitch introduced their adopted baby, Lily, to the world.

Since then, the couple - played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet - has been an integral part of the comedy's Emmy-winning formula.

Other US networks have taken notice.

This fall, Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells star as a gay couple having a baby with the help of a surrogate mother in the NBC comedy The New Normal. And over at CBS, Michael Urie and Brandon Routh play a couple in the sitcom Partners.

Writers honor ABC sitcom with prominent gay couple raising a child

ABC's sitcom Modern Family has won the best TV comedy prize at the Writers Guild of America Awards for the third consecutive year.

The critical and ratings hit prominently features gay couple Cam and Mitch (played by Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson) who are raising a young daughter.

After the Sunday (19 February) night awards ceremony in Hollywood, Stonestreet sent a humorous congratulations tweet out to the writers: 'The writers won! congrats to you all! again, without your words, we actors are just hot, sexy hunks of silky, supple flesh.'

Modern Family star tells Gay Star News marriage foes embrace Mitch & Cam

Jesse Tyler Ferguson was on the Los Angeles set of Modern Family last week when the 9th District U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that California's ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional.

Between shooting scenes as Mitch on the ABC comedy, Ferguson had taken a pen and made a sign that read: 'How could you not want to see us tie the knot?' and posed holding it with actor Eric Stonestreet who plays his husband, Cam, on the series.

While gay marriage has been a hot topic in the GOP presidential primaries, Modern Family creator Steve Levitan told TV critics Tuesday (10 January) that there has been very little pushback about his show's gay couple.

'To the far-right, watch the show and I kind of dare you to not love Cam and Mitch,' Levitan said. 'I'm pleasantly surprised to the world's reaction to that part of our modern family.'
